Feature: Convert png to ico file when chosen in folder icon properties

What feature or improvement do you think would benefit Files?

hello id like a way that could make it easier to make custom folders icons. like a built in png to ico converter. i love oraganizing my folders and such the main reason ive gotten file 4.0 and i want to be able to make it easier to know what is in a folder without clicking or reading names for 100s of folders. currently i use this method to do so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNsvDWw684U . but its super tedius to convert all the pngs to ico files. if this is not possible i understand that

There could be a very simple PNG to ICO feature, but it will lose out on the way ICO files are typically designed to provide pixel perfect graphics which are created at set scales, so they will not provide a perfect visual - but that may be a sacrifice worth making if someone just wants to grab a PNG or even SVG file to use.

Not sure if there is a CLI approach to set a folder icon, I assume there must be some API we currently use for setting an ICO file, so we would need to create a UI for choosing an image, and generating an ICO file from it, and then the user would need to choose where to save this ICO, for us to assign.

I'd be against implementing it ourselves, Rather, I'd suggest to develop a ffmpeg integration or other image tools (like, FFmpegIntegration : IImageToolIntegration) if we consider integrating with CLI tools.

If users are already using another tool to convert them, it doesn't really matter as it was never going to be a complete ico file anyway

The file picker could have png added as accepted input, then Files detect it's a png. does the convention and adds it to the folder the icon is being applied to so that it stay used after moving. So there wouldn't need to be any more menus.

Should we inform the user that because they chose an image and not an ICO, that "Files has generated a folder.ico file, and saved it inside the folder" ?

We would probably need to inform the user that the file is being converted and ask them to choose a location to save it to.

I am in favour of placing the icon inside the folder, similar to folder background images or album art - But informing the user their chosen image has been converted and saved as folder.ico

@0x5bfa doing this via an integration is an option, but requiring additional setup would limit the usefulness of the feature. That being said, an integration could be worth it if we were to add additional features as well.
