Saving settings error and "Markdown Syntax Theme" not saving configuration

Hi Fernando,

I’ve installed the latest version of Jotty (1.14.1) and noticed a couple of issues:

• Save nnn button

  • Open the user menu (bottom-left corner).
  • Go to Settings.
  • Change any configuration in any section.
  • Click the Save nnn button.
  • An error appears: “Validation Error. Please fix the validation errors before saving.”
  • No indication is provided about what the actual validation problem is.

• Markdown Syntax Theme configuration

  • Open the user menu (bottom-left corner).
  • Go to Settings.
  • Scroll down to Markdown Syntax Theme under Notes Preferences.
  • Change the default option to another value in the combo box.
  • The Save Editor button in the Notes Preferences section remains disabled (grayed out), so the configuration cannot be saved.

I am not sure when this regression was introduced, but I can confirm that these buttons worked correctly in earlier versions.

PS: By the way, I like to share a quick comment about the application’s configuration options. Currently, there are three different places where settings can be adjusted:

• The user configuration in the bottom-left corner.
• Another user configuration button in the top-right corner.
• A general configuration button, also in the top-right corner.

This setup feels confusing. Would you consider consolidating all configuration options into a single location in the future? Doing so would create a more consistent user interface, reduce the number of clicks required, and make the experience much clearer for users.

There's already a fix for the first issue you raised on the :develop branch, someone raised it with me in the morning and I've sorted it out (will be released today)

Regarding your feedback on the confusion

• The shield icon is for admin settings, these apply to ALL users on the application
• The user button on the bottom left is for your own user settings, they only apply to you and other users can customise their experience however they like
• The cog icon is for session only settings, they only persist on the browser, if you open another browsers they'll be re-set to default values

Consolidating everything in one page would be even more confusing as they all have a different purpose as it stands.
Do you have any ideas/suggestions (with this added context) on how you'd make the whole experience less confusing? It has always been a bit of a concern for me how complex the whole configuration system is getting and this is actually a very good feedback

This has been addressed and fixed in https://github.com/fccview/jotty/releases/tag/1.14.3 ❤️
Let me know if you have any ideas/opinion on how to address the points I have raised above, I'll close the issue for now :)

This is a fantastic contribution, thank you!

I may have not express myself properly when explaining what the current session modal does, they are quick device specific settings. The idea with these is to have a very quick toggle to make your screen smaller if you are on a big screen, or quickly change theme for the specific device you are on, as the app may look different and so on, it's the only real issue I have with your wireframes, I really don't want to sacrifice that handy quick setting toggle

Everything else makes total sense and I'll likely implement it, as it currently feels a bit too chaotic, you're right!

It's a lot to take in, I'll think of what to do with the quick settings and start working on this as soon as I am done with the next release ♥️

Great to hear that you are open to considering the suggested changes. I understand your concerns about the "Session" settings, and I am completely fine with your approach. It simply means that the “First option” is the one you find most appropriate for the situation, and that is perfectly okay.

Since this option gives you more space in the main frame, you could add a short explanation of what each configuration means, if you think that would help. I also tried to structure everything so you can reuse most of your existing code. In fact, I believe the only major change is creating a new settings page with the same layout as the regular page (menu on the left, header at the top, main frame in the middle).

One more thing to consider is choosing clear and consistent names. I did not adjust those. For example, having “Settings” under both “Account” and “Admin” is not ideal. Perhaps “Account” could be renamed to something like “Personal”, and "Admin" to something like "Application". I am sure you will find the right names for everything.

It's a lot to take in, I'll think of what to do with the quick settings and start working on this as soon as I am done with the next release

Take it easy. This work will be available for years, so there is no need to rush, especially now, with everyone heading into the holiday period. This kind of change is a "nice-to-have", it is definitely not a showstopper for using the application.

Ha! Yeah don't worry, not rushing it, I wouldn't be able to even if I wanted as the kids obviously take priority at the moment hahaha I'm off work so barely spending any time on my open source repos either, holiday is holiday ♥️

I can reuse the majority of the code, including the sidebar as I built everything to be reusable, shouldn't be an issue at all, the hardest part is planning it all, I'll keep you updated and will give a ping if I need any help, this is already a huge time saver for me, thank you!

Last night I played around with it and it turned out to be much easier than we both expected - this will likely come through with next release as everything works just fine, I reused 90% of the code, just made it so most of the data is fetched server side rather than client side (wanted to do that for a while anyway)

Your wireframes helped a lot and I think this divide makes a lot of sense.
Will wait for your feedback, still need to fix a bit of the individual tabs as the new layout needs things to be less.... centre aligned 😆

Will not be using my laptop for the next couple of days, have a great holiday period if you celebrate ❤️
