I have updated my installation to v.0.5.6 but I cannot see the new music plugin.
The list of Installed Plugins shows me:

I thought the new plugin was part of the new version 0.5.6

Hi @HansUwe52, thanks for the report! You're right, something went wrong during the upgrade. I've already shipped a fix — v0.5.7 is out now.

What happened

The 4 new plugins (Discogs, Deezer, MusicBrainz, GoodLib) were actually copied onto your server during the upgrade — the files are on disk. The problem was on the database side: the rows in the plugins table were being written only on the next page load after the upgrade (via PluginManager::autoRegisterBundledPlugins() in public/index.php:345), not during the upgrade itself. You looked at Admin → Plugins before that follow-up request fired, so you saw the old 5-plugin list.

On top of that, two of those new plugins (Deezer and MusicBrainz) were missing their wrapper.php main file — they would have crashed the app if activated. Those two are metadata-only entries (the real API calls for Deezer cover art and MusicBrainz lookups are performed inside the Discogs plugin as part of its fallback chain), so they should have been marked optional from day one but weren't.

What's fixed in v0.5.7

1. Updater::installUpdate() now calls autoRegisterBundledPlugins() at the end of the upgrade, so the DB is consistent with the filesystem the moment the upgrade returns — no more "wait for the next request".
2. A post-install-patch.php ships alongside the release ZIP. The updater downloads and runs it during the upgrade, inserting the 4 missing plugin rows via INSERT IGNORE. This covers users upgrading from any version 0.5.0–0.5.6 — so your installation will be fixed the instant the upgrade completes.
3. deezer and musicbrainz are now marked "optional": true in their plugin.json and ship a no-op wrapper.php stub. They register as inactive by default and don't crash if someone activates them manually.

I reproduced your exact scenario locally (fresh v0.5.3 install → admin-UI upgrade to v0.5.7) and the plugins table now has 9 rows immediately after the upgrade, without any extra page load.

What to do on your side

Open Admin → Aggiornamenti (Updates) and upgrade to v0.5.7. After the upgrade completes you should see all 9 plugins in the list. The music-related ones (Discogs, Deezer, MusicBrainz) will appear disabled by default — they are optional network-backed scrapers, so enable them only if you plan to catalog music media (CDs / vinyl / cassettes).

If you can't upgrade right now

Open any admin page (e.g., Dashboard) and then go back to Admin → Plugins. The auto-registration will run on that next page load and the full list should appear. But I'd recommend upgrading anyway so you also get the Deezer/MusicBrainz stub fix.

Sorry for the confusion — this is now covered by a regression test so it won't happen again. Let me know if you still see anything off after upgrading.

I have now upgraded to v0.5.7 and followed your instructions, but I still only can see the "traditional" 5 plugnins.

Thanks for the screenshot @HansUwe52 — confirms the plugins table still only has the 5 original rows on your install, so the post-install-patch that should have added the 4 music plugins either didn't run or failed silently. I need 2 quick data points to narrow it down, and I've got a copy-paste workaround that fixes your install immediately.

1) Check the Updater log

Via FTP/SSH, open storage/logs/app.log and look for the most recent block. Key lines to find (in order):

Paste the last ~30 lines of app.log (search for post-install or STEP 4) and I'll tell you exactly what happened. The most likely cause is that your host blocks outbound HTTPS from PHP, so the Updater can't fetch https://github.com/.../post-install-patch.php — it handles that gracefully by skipping, which is correct in general but not helpful here.

2) Check the filesystem

ls storage/plugins/

(via FTP just open the folder). You should see 9 folders including discogs/, deezer/, musicbrainz/, goodlib/. If some are missing, the Updater's plugin-copy step ran into permission issues on your host — a different problem, fixable too.

3) Immediate workaround (fixes your install regardless of what's above)

Log into phpMyAdmin (or whatever DB tool your host provides), select the Pinakes database, open the SQL tab, and paste this:

Then refresh Admin → Plugins. The 4 new entries should appear. Discogs/Deezer/MusicBrainz will show as inactive (that's correct — they're optional music scrapers). The first request after this will also call autoRegisterBundledPlugins(), which will UPDATE display_name / version / description to match the actual plugin.json on disk.

One caveat: the SQL above is harmless if the plugin folders are on disk (Updater step ran fine, only the DB insert failed). But if folder #2 returns less than 9 folders, the rows will exist in the DB but the plugins won't load when activated. In that case I need the ls output to diagnose the permissions issue separately.

Found it. Your log shows the exact cause — and it's worse than I thought. Two bugs chained together:

So the 4 rows I inserted via SQL were immediately deleted 23 seconds later, on your next page load. Here's why:

Bug #1: The updater failed to copy the 4 new plugin folders onto your server. Your install is running under /var/www/html — looks like a Docker/container setup with strict filesystem permissions that caused the rename step to fail silently.

Bug #2: PluginManager::cleanupOrphanPlugins() then notices "DB has a row for discogs but storage/plugins/discogs/ doesn't exist on disk" → treats it as an abandoned plugin and deletes the row. It doesn't distinguish between user-installed plugins (correct to delete if the folder is gone) and bundled plugins (which should NEVER be deleted — they're core to the app and can be re-copied from any release ZIP).

Immediate workaround that actually sticks

Since the DB insert alone won't survive, you need to put the folders on disk first, then the auto-registration will pick them up on the next page load. Here's how:

1. Download the release ZIP locally:

2. Extract it on your laptop. Inside you'll find pinakes-v0.5.7/storage/plugins/ with all 9 plugin folders.
3. Upload these 4 folders to your server via FTP/SFTP into storage/plugins/:
   • discogs/
   • deezer/
   • musicbrainz/
   • goodlib/
4. Make sure the web server user can read them (chmod -R 755 is usually enough; match ownership with the other plugin folders already there — probably www-data:www-data).
5. Refresh Admin → Plugins. On that page load, autoRegisterBundledPlugins() will see the new folders, insert the DB rows, and this time they'll stick (the orphan sweep won't delete them because the folders exist now).

You should see all 9 plugins. Discogs / Deezer / MusicBrainz will be inactive by default (correct, they're optional music scrapers).

What I'm doing on my side

I'm shipping v0.5.8 that fixes both bugs:

• cleanupOrphanPlugins() will skip any plugin whose name is in BundledPlugins::LIST (so even if your upgrade transiently loses the files again, the DB rows stay and get re-synced on the next update).
• updateBundledPlugins() will log at WARNING level (not DEBUG) when the rename step fails, so this class of silent failure becomes visible in app.log immediately.

I'll ping back here as soon as v0.5.8 is out. Thanks a lot for the detailed log — this is the kind of edge case that no test suite catches until a real user runs into it.

The workaround did the trick.

Compared to the import of books, the scrapping takes a longer time.

Maybe the user interface should be modified to make it clear, that Pinakes also can catalog records!
You could change the menu: New Book to New Item and possibly add a submenu for

• Books
• Music
  When you click on Books, you’ll be taken to the book cataloguing page.
  When you click on Music, you could be taken to a modified cataloguing page.
  In this way, you could expand the cataloguing options for, for example, films, paper documents and archival material.
  If this is of interest, I would be happy to contribute a possible mapping between cataloguing fields for books and archival records.

Scraping speed — why it's slower than ISBN imports

You noticed correctly: a Discogs scrape takes 3–8 seconds where an ISBN lookup against Open Library or Google Books finishes in under a second. Three structural reasons:

1. Discogs rate limits — anonymous requests are capped at 25 per minute, authenticated requests at 60. Every scrape starts with a search + a release detail fetch, so you spend 2 requests per book minimum. Without a token the scraping service pauses between requests to stay under the limit.
2. Fallback chain — if Discogs doesn't return a usable result (older pressings, obscure labels, bad barcode), the Discogs plugin cascades to MusicBrainz (search by barcode) → Cover Art Archive (high-res cover via the MBID) → Deezer (last-chance cover + tracklist). Each of those is another HTTP round-trip. An ISBN lookup in contrast hits Open Library once and you're done.
3. Richer payload — Discogs returns the full tracklist, label, country, year, style tags, cover art URL, and artist credits. We extract all of that and format the tracklist into the description field. Google Books returns maybe 200 bytes of metadata; Discogs returns 50 KB of JSON.

If speed is a bottleneck for you: the biggest win comes from setting a personal Discogs token. You can already do this in Pinakes — Admin → Plugins → Discogs → Configure accepts your personal access token. Generate one on discogs.com/settings/developers (takes 30 seconds, no app registration needed), paste it, save. The scraper then moves from 25 to 60 requests/minute, so a batch of 30 albums goes from ~4 minutes to ~1.5 minutes.

UX proposal — context-aware label

Your idea is the right one. Simple, incremental, fits the existing schema: when a music plugin is active (or when tipo_media !== 'libro' on a specific record), swap the "Book details" label for "Item details" and hide the ISBN field on the form. Pinakes already has the tipo_media ENUM (libro/disco/audiolibro/dvd/altro), so we have the signal — we just need the view to respect it. I'll track this as a dedicated enhancement (please open an issue titled something like "Context-aware catalog form for non-book media types" if you want to follow up there, or I'll create it and tag you).

Field mapping — yes please

To make sure we're aligned on what I mean here, since the term can be ambiguous:

Every class of collection material has its own metadata standard:

• Books follow MARC21 / ISBD — fields like title, author, ISBN, publisher, Dewey classification. Pinakes already models these.
• Archival records follow ISAD(G) (or its successor Records in Context / RiC). The core fields are quite different: reference_code, date_of_creation (often a range, not a single year), extent (physical size, e.g. "3 folders, 245 leaves"), creator (the producing body, not an author), custodial_history, scope_and_content, access_conditions, arrangement (hierarchical — fonds / series / sub-series / file / item).
• Films follow FIAF or MODS, with their own production/distribution fields.

What I mean by "field mapping" is a concrete table along these lines:

That table is the prerequisite for deciding which fields to add to the schema, which existing ones to rename, and which belong in a separate records table entirely. Without it we'd be guessing what archivists actually need.

If you can put together something like that for the ISAD(G) → Pinakes mapping, focused on archival records specifically (not trying to cover films/music/etc. at the same time — too broad for a first pass), it would be extremely useful. I'd suggest opening a new issue with the enhancement label and pasting the mapping there as a draft we can iterate on.

It seems to me, that the music scapper cannot recognize this type of ID.
