Just to clarify, the espflash issue isn't actually with 2.0.0-rc.4, because this has not been released yet; the version number just got bumped prematurely, so this is the development version (ie. main branch).

(I've changed the name of the issue to avoid confusion, mostly for me 😁)

Matter-rs - The pure-Rust Matter implementation

• This fork is now no_std, completely alloc-free and async friendly! Example
• Passes unit tests
• Works with chip-tool
• Midway into working with Google's Matter Controller (Nest Hub) UPDATE: Works with Nest Hub even if erroring out at the end (but so is the mainline of @kedars). The "light switch" is nevertheless registered in Google Home and can be switched on/off. Missing subscriptions might be one reason for the errors.
• In discussions with @kedars if/how to proceed with upstreaming bits and pieces
• Next steps?
  • Test/fix on something smaller than Linux/Mac (ESP IDF)
  • Further simplify the persistence story
  • ? Get rid of the explicit Matter Transport State Machine by re-designing the Exchange metaphor
  • Ping the Embassy community for suggestions

How the bare-metal ESP-RS folks can help?

Try to run the thing on bare-metal!! (And fail, initially.) What is necessary:

• Crypto. Either mbed-tls on bare-metal or ensure these guys are all no_std and no-alloc compatible Just use the crypto-rustcrypto feature for now. Because of the x509 dependency, we need alloc, but only because of x509 perhaps we can upstream a no-alloc impl in future.
• Bring your own UDP implementation. See the above example. Matter transport in the fork is actually unaware of UDP currently.
• Bring your own mDNS implementation. This trait. UPDATE: needs to be &mut dyn compatible and is sync. So a potential async impl on top of UDP needs to be well hidden and the &mut dyn sync trait impl should notify the async stuff for new/removed registrations via e.g. an embassy_sync::Signal() or suchlike. Fortunately, Signal::signal can be called from anywhere as it is neither async, nor blocking.
• Bring your own "current time-or-ticks-since-e.g.-boot" (for timeout tracking). This fn. UPDATE: currently a simple fn to save myself some extra Rust lifetime hell. :) If too big of a hurdle, we can turn it into a Fn.
• Bring your own simplistic UTC calendar. This fn. There is one place (ASN1 certificates), where we need to serialize a UTC timestamp as 'yyyymmhhmmss'. UPDATE: same justification for it being a simple fn as per above. UPDATE: No longer necessary
• Bring your own randomizer. This fn. UPDATE: same justification for it being a simple fn as per above.

Would be interesting to try the baremetal with e.g. Google Nest controller. For this we need an mdns implementation that supports service sub-types, but the rest should actually work...

The fix for RustCrypto already landed in matter-rs/main

Next thing to do (for me) is to come up with a real mDNS implementation - would be really awesome to get it to work with Google Nest

@bjoernQ Thanks for the update. I've rebased no_std and sequential on top of the mainline two days ago.

Would you mind sharing your code? Specifically interested in two topics:
a) Memory management: what buffers did you decrease, which were taking up the most space? Note that I've significantly decreased several buffers in sequential (but not in no_std), but then sequential comes with an extra memory overhead as well, as it can spin up to 16 (or whatever the user configures in future) exchanges, where each exchange needs 2 RX and 1 TX buffer (roughly speaking).
b) Did you use the async code path, with - say - embassy-executor and embassy-net, or did you use the old style nb approach? Or?

Currently you would need to increase the amount of heap memory or include the changes from the PR mentioned in notes.md.

a) I decreased buffers for the UDP sockets, the matter rx/tx buffers and that scratch-buffer (?) passed to matter.start to get it working
b) it's using a polling-based approach since it's just easier for now (for me)

I now was able to commission the device in Google Home - it shows up but is shown as offline. But when I choose Details in the device view it successfully talks to the device (to get the firmware version etc.)
