Kerning is messed up

Steps to reproduce

I couldn't help noticing that the kerning on the text rendering for messages is all sorts of bad. Even when using another font.

Above is the default font, below is Atkinson Hyperlegible. Notice the "el" in "really" in the first picture, and the "keming" in the second picture. This isn't normal, and it seems like nobody's reported this. Could be just a Linux thing.

Letters spaced apart appropriately.

What happened instead?

Letters crunched together randomly.

@t3chguy Uh, it's not just the flatpak, I've discovered. Same behavior in desktop off the Arch repo.
