Show alert while running a block

Hi

Is there a good way to show the message while running a block and hide it when it ends?
Sometimes the block might run a 2-3 seconds, sometimes 30, and sometimes less than a second, so having a "minimum" time to show it would be nice.

blocks might be:

1. updating something on the database which might take time
2. waiting for a server to respond
3. processing video
   etc.
