Footprints were chosen to maximize sourceability in US and Global across the commonly used frequencies. 3215 2-pin is extremely common for 32.768kHz LSE 3225 4-pin is very common for the 8-48MHz range I tried sourcing 2016 parts, but unfortunately they're hit or miss.
