Astroarch on RPI5

Hi,

I installed the latest version of astroarch on a RPI5. So long I don't make an update all works perfect. After updating the system (update-astroarch) the RP'I5 isn't able to boot. If I put the SD Card into a RPI4 the raspi is booting and all works fine.+

I have the same issue on RPi 5 with NVMe ssd.

what is that virtual console?

@pyq8gk9hbs-star Do you only have an SD card or also an NVMe on your PI 5? What is the size of your SD card and its write speed? Do you have devices connected via GPIO or UART on your PI 5 and not on your PI 4? When you are on your PI 4, please run sudo journalctl > journal.txt in a console and send us the file.

@BenoitBotton When you start up your PI, does the LED turn green and then the PI shut down (red LED)? Or can you not access the desktop but the PI is on (green LED)?

I have a NVMe on PI5. The size 512Gb.
I don't have devices connected.
On the RPI5 the run LED tunr green and stay green.

Do you have an SD card on the PI 4, or is it your PI5 NVMe that you installed on the PI4?

Sorry, I have only SD card on RPI4 and RPI5. On my RPI5 with NVMe I tried it before. (The same as with SD card)

I don't understand. You have a single SD card with AstroArch on it that you use on PI 4 and 5. Is that right? And do you use your NVMe on the PI5 for storage? Or does it also have AstroArch on it?

for troubleshooting, I have the pi on my desk without any astro gear connected. The pi stays on green led but it doesn't connect to home WIFI and I cannot see the hotspot. If I then connect a screen via HDMI, I get nothing. If I boot it with screen connected, the boot process hangs at starting Virtual Console setup.

in your reply in Discord, you mention a kernel issue, so it seems this cannot be fixed in place, but requires re-imaging the NVMe and holding off updating. Am I right?

@BenoitBotton Maybe not if you have access to the console with Ctrl + Alt + F3 on your PI 5. If so, try running pacman -Sy raspberrypi-utils rpi5-eeprom and then sudo rpi-eeprom-udate -a to update the PI bootloader to 2025/12/08. You can use the command vcgencmd bootloader_version to see the bootloader version.

Apparently, some people are having problems with HDMI as well, and updating the bootloader fixes this. Maybe that's what's causing the console to freeze. We'll have to see about the nvme issue.

unfortunately there is no access to the different TTYs. I think it is because the boot process doesn't go far enough. I might try a chroot into the NVMe system from a system running from the SD card tonight. or just cut my losses and re-image to make sure I have a working system if I get a half decent night

I don't use a NVMe neither on RPI5 nor on RPI4. I tried it before on a RPI5 with NVMe. The result was the same.

@BenoitBotton @pyq8gk9hbs-star You can update the PI 5 firmware from an SD card using AstroArch or Raspbian

AstroArch: sudo pacman -Sy rpi5-eeprom & sudo rpi-eeprom-udate -a

yes, that fixed it for me. and I was able to run update-astroarch without issue. I need to get the pi to my rig and test basic connectivity with the rig.
