Created a new method getStatus to check the current subscription status. Changed the logic of the subscribe method. It now can subscribe, update or resubscribe based on the current subscription status.

Based on the issue from Mikel (https://processwire.com/talk/topic/19023-subscribe-to-mailchimp/?do=findComment&comment=166625) I made some changes in the subscription logic.
I created a new method getStatus to check the current subscription status and updated subscribe method, so it now can the subscribe, update or resubscribe based on the current subscription status.
