lab oss: poll remote bootstrap completion and nested Observer health #36

Closed

Description

@danielgwilson

Context

A 2026-06-02 live OSS meta-lab run launched 4/4 E2B desktop streams and started 4/4 visible bootstrap terminals for:

  • developit/mitt
  • lukeed/clsx
  • sindresorhus/is-plain-obj
  • ai/nanoid

Local ignored evidence path: .mimetic/runs/oss-live-setup-proof/.

The run bundle verified 5/5 public-safety/schema checks, but every top-level lane remains running at 74% because the harness does not poll remote bootstrap completion, remote log tail, or nested Observer health back into the top-level bundle.

Expected

mimetic lab oss should be able to graduate each lane to an explicit terminal state without requiring a human to watch the E2B desktop stream.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Top-level bundle records a public-safe completion state per OSS lane: passed, failed, blocked, or timed_out.
  • Completion classification reads only public-safe remote evidence: bootstrap exit status, sanitized log tail, nested Observer file presence, and nested verify result where available.
  • The Observer updates each lane with the terminal state and a useful reason.
  • Stream auth URLs, API keys, sandbox-private values, and raw logs are not written to committed files or public issue drafts.
  • A no-provider fixture/test covers at least one passed lane and one failed lane.

Proof Commands

pnpm check
pnpm mimetic -- lab oss --dry-run --json --no-open
pnpm mimetic -- verify --run latest --json

If live keys are available, also prove:

pnpm mimetic -- lab oss --detach --no-open --json --repos developit/mitt,lukeed/clsx --count 2
pnpm mimetic -- verify --run latest --json

Public Safety

Do not include sandbox IDs, stream passwords, API keys, local env files, raw private logs, or target-repo mutations in committed source or public issue payloads.

    @danielgwilson
    OwnerAuthor

    Implemented locally on branch/worktree codex/oss-meta-completion.

    What changed

    • Added OSS meta-lab remote bootstrap completion markers.
    • mimetic lab oss now polls public-safe remote completion evidence and records terminal lane states in the top-level bundle: passed, failed, blocked, or timed_out.
    • Passed lanes include nested verify + nested Observer presence in stream.completion.
    • Observer labels/counts now display Passed and Timed out states instead of leaving completed live lanes as running.
    • Added a no-provider fixture test covering one passed E2B-style lane and one failed E2B-style lane.

    Proof

    pnpm check
    pnpm public-surface:scan
    git diff --check
    pnpm mimetic -- doctor
    pnpm mimetic -- watch --json --no-open --run-id watch-completion-proof
    pnpm mimetic -- lab oss --dry-run --json --no-open --run-id oss-meta-completion-dry-proof
    pnpm mimetic -- lab oss-smoke --limit 4 --json --run-id oss-smoke-completion-proof
    pnpm mimetic -- lab oss --detach --no-open --json --run-id oss-live-completion-proof --repos developit/mitt,lukeed/clsx,sindresorhus/is-plain-obj,ai/nanoid --count 4
pnpm mimetic -- verify --run oss-live-completion-proof --json
    pnpm mimetic -- lab oss --detach --no-open --json --run-id oss-live-completion-retry-developit --repos developit/mitt --count 1
pnpm mimetic -- verify --run oss-live-completion-retry-developit --json

    Results:

    • Full test suite: 10 test files, 41 tests passed.
    • OSS smoke: all four disposable public repos passed clone/init/doctor/watch/verify.
    • Live four-lane run: 3/4 lanes reached passed from remote completion markers; one E2B desktop launch failed before stream/bootstrap.
    • Targeted retry for developit/mitt: reached passed from remote completion marker.
    • Both live bundles verified 5/5 schema/redaction/review/public-safety checks.

The live failure appears to be transient E2B launch substrate noise rather than a Mimetic setup failure; the retry passed for the same repo.

    Public safety

No target OSS repos were mutated. Runtime evidence remains under ignored .mimetic/. This comment intentionally excludes sandbox IDs, stream auth URLs, env file contents, raw logs, and private paths.
