It seems like your ghc-pkg output has unicode or some such in it. Any idea of anything funky in there? Could you ghc-pkg list > out.txt and attach it?

I'd tried stack exec hoogle generate then got a different error.

'TlsExceptionHostPort' error resolved by http://stackoverflow.com/a/32654494 .

stack exec hoogle -- genrate command is working.

stack exec hoogle -- generate --local still shows same error.

Note that stack exec hoogle -- --generate --insecure turns off certificate checking, so that would also fix the first problem, albeit with less safety.

Can you attach the output of ghc-pkg dump as well, since that will be exactly what Hoogle chokes on.

Please open ghci and try:

import System.Process
length <$> readProcess "ghc-pkg" ["dump"] ""

If that fails (which I expect it should), remove the length <$> and tell me the last bit on the screen before failure.

My guess is that readProcess is reading as UTF8, but your ghc-pkg is spitting out as ASCII, or something similar. Hopefully just a case of switching a few pipes to binary, once I can figure out how.

Reading the code, it seems that readProcess already reads all the handles in binary, so it shouldn't be that. That makes me wonder if there are bad characters popping out on the stderr instead, which readProcess sets to inherit, and may go through the wrong bits. Can you ghc-pkg dump 2> stderr.txt and attach that?

ghc-pkg dump 2> stderr.txt has nothing.

At first "package cache out of date. run ghc-pkg recache command" like message in there. After execute recache, stderr has nothing.

One weird thing is, when output finished of ghc-pkg dump, it does not return to prompt directly. If I hit enter, then return to shell prompt.

I'm certainly your Korean version is going to be part of the problem somehow, but I really can't see how. Can you try:

If that works, move on to printing b and c. If not, that's interesting too.

Weird! Something in the process just isn't exiting, and is causing the process to reject termination. I suspect it's an issue with either the process library (e.g. @snoyberg) or GHC HQ.
