Escaping java operators in variable names

How can I escape java operators as ^, -, etc in a variable name?
Same question for the dot

Example
{{myVar-v1.1}}

Can I suggest this?
If "^,+,-,*" have no blanks around before and after, they are part of a variable name else they are operators.
Maybe it is simpler and better than escaping?

An example
{{aa - bb}} it is an operator
{{aa-bb}} it is a variable
