According to the documentation, supports is called by AuthenticationProviderManager automatically: Each provider (since it implements AuthenticationProviderInterface) has a method supports() by which the AuthenticationProviderManager can determine if it supports the given token. http://symfony.com/doc/current/components/security/authentication.html#authentication-providers
