Description

Adds the Backend API's enterprise connection test-run endpoints to @clerk/backend, so server code can test a SAML or OIDC connection against its IdP without calling the API by hand:

  • enterpriseConnections.createEnterpriseConnectionTestRun(enterpriseConnectionId) calls POST /v1/enterprise_connections/{id}/test_runs and returns { url }, the short-lived URL that starts the test sign-in.
  • enterpriseConnections.getEnterpriseConnectionTestRunList(enterpriseConnectionId, params) calls GET /v1/enterprise_connections/{id}/test_runs with an optional status filter plus limit/offset, and returns a PaginatedResourceResponse<EnterpriseConnectionTestRun[]>.

The endpoints are already in the Backend API spec and in Clerk's Java, C# and PHP SDKs (createTestRun / listTestRuns), and clerk-js exposes the same operations through organization.createEnterpriseConnectionTestRun() and getEnterpriseConnectionTestRuns(). The method names here follow this package's existing EnterpriseConnectionAPI naming.

Test-run objects in the Backend API response carry no object field, so getEnterpriseConnectionTestRunList() maps them with EnterpriseConnectionTestRun.fromJSON() itself, the way EmailAPI.createBatch() maps its results, instead of relying on the ObjectType switch in the deserializer.

The payload JSON types and EnterpriseConnectionTestRunStatus come from @clerk/shared/types, the same ones clerk-js uses, and the backend EnterpriseConnectionTestRunJSON is derived from the shared one without object. The log JSON extends the shared one with level and message required, as the Backend API spec marks them, and status is a string on the resource, matching EnterpriseConnectionTestRunResource. EnterpriseConnectionTestRun, its related classes, EnterpriseConnectionTestRunJSON and EnterpriseConnectionTestRunLogJSON are exported from @clerk/backend and registered in the Typedoc link replacements alongside the other enterprise connection types.

📝 Walkthrough

The backend package adds exported JSON and resource types for enterprise connection test runs. Its API can create a test run and return a sign-in URL, or list test runs with pagination and status filters. List responses are mapped to resource objects, including nested user information, logs, and SAML or OAuth payloads. Tests cover request parameters, response mapping, and missing connection IDs. Documentation links and a minor-release changeset are also added.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Suggested reviewers: manovotny

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d5074

Incomplete test-run logs may expose undefined fields despite the SDK declaring strings, so preserve optionality before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d5074

The new methods preserve the existing authenticated request path, and no security bypass was demonstrated. Returned results can contain identity-provider tokens and signed SAML responses, however, and the service’s authorization, redaction and test-link lifetime guarantees could not be verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added SDK exposure is credential-bearing test data returned under the configured backend credential for a requested connection. Maximum cross-connection or tenant exposure cannot be established without the service’s authorization policy; public SDK availability alone does not make these results anonymously reachable.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Both methods reject empty connection IDs, use the existing path-construction helper and inherit the shared authenticated transport. The ID guard is not an ownership check; authorization for the selected connection remains a service responsibility.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected SDK path issues one creation POST per invocation, supplies no idempotency key and surfaces transport failures without an automatic retry loop. It implements no test-run state machine, cancellation or cleanup. Completion, interruption recovery, repeated or concurrent creation, URL expiry and retained-data cleanup therefore depend on service guarantees not established here.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve optional log fields across the backend boundary.

EnterpriseConnectionTestRunLogJSON narrows shared-optional level and message to required strings, but EnterpriseConnectionTestRun.fromJSON maps every received log without validation. A shared-conformant response that omits either field therefore creates a public log whose readonly string property is undefined. This violates the public type contract and can cause string operations to fail at runtime.

Re the outside-diff comment in this review about EnterpriseConnectionTestRunLogJSON:

Both Backend API spec versions (2026-05-12, which the SDK pins, and 2026-08-20) mark level and message as required on test-run logs, so the backend types follow the spec rather than the looser shared type, which models the Frontend API response. fromJSON() trusts the documented response shape the same way the other backend resources do. Happy to make them optional if maintainers prefer.
