Description

@clerk/chrome-extension declared "sideEffects": false, but its root entry runs setup code when it loads: dist/esm/index.js and dist/cjs/index.js call setErrorThrowerOptions(...) and setClerkJSLoadingErrorPackageName(...), apply the window.global shim, and register globalThis.__clerkSharedModules. Bundlers trust the flag and drop that code when an app only imports re-exported components such as ClerkProvider. In a plain plasmo build (Parcel), the extension popup renders blank with setErrorThrowerOptions is not a function. It renders correctly with plasmo build --hoist and with plasmo dev.

This removes the sideEffects field. An earlier version of this PR listed the two root entry files instead. Dylan Staley pointed out that marking the entry points is close to dropping the flag anyway, and suggested removing it if bundle size didn't change. It didn't.

Sizes measured at clerk/clerk-chrome-extension-demo#188 with 3.1.96, comparing sideEffects: false / entry-file list / field removed:

  • Plain plasmo build, Parcel's default bundler: 27,689,242 / 27,689,257 / 27,689,267 bytes. The popup is blank with false and renders with the other two.
  • Plasmo's stock bundler: 324.47 MB in all three.
  • esbuild 0.18 (bundle, minify, splitting, React external): a popup entry importing ClerkProvider, Show and UserButton is 2.48 MB, and a background entry importing createClerkClient from /client is 2.36 MB, identical across all three.

The drop isn't specific to Parcel. Bundling import { ClerkProvider } from '@clerk/chrome-extension' against the current release drops the setup in Rollup 4, Rolldown 1.1 (Vite 8) and webpack 5 (with and without module concatenation); esbuild keeps it. With the field removed, all five keep it, at the same output size as the entry-file list.

📝 Walkthrough

The Chrome extension package no longer declares "sideEffects": false. A patch changeset documents the production-build blank popup symptom associated with omitted load-time setup and records unchanged measured bundle sizes.

./dist/esm/index.js and ./dist/cjs/index.js, preserving tree-shaking for the
client, background, legacy, and react entries while retaining load-time setup
from src/index.ts. Update the changeset’s bundle-size statement to qualify that
the unchanged size was measured specifically with the Plasmo build.
