[Bug] Fully Local Installation Stuck on Ready after backloop.dev certificate service shutdown #722

Description

@waruhachi

Report

Fully local installation consistently gets stuck on Ready.

The IPA signs successfully, but once installation starts, Feather never progresses past Ready.

This happens with every IPA I have tested, including very small apps.

Semi-local works normally on the same device with the same certificates/apps.

Configuration

  • Installation Type: Server
  • Server Type: Fully Local
  • Only use localhost address: Enabled

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Feather
  2. Go to Settings > Installation
  3. Set Installation Type to Server
  4. Set Server Type to Fully Local
  5. Enable Only use localhost address
  6. Tap Update SSL Certificates
  7. Sign any IPA
  8. Attempt to install it
  9. Installation remains stuck on Ready

Expected behavior

The installation should proceed past Ready and install the signed IPA.

Actual behavior

The installation remains indefinitely on Ready.

Troubleshooting performed

  • Tested multiple IPAs, including a very small app
  • Every IPA behaves the same way
  • Used Update SSL Certificates
  • Tested on Wi-Fi
  • Tested with Wi-Fi disabled using cellular/LTE only
  • Same behavior on cellular, so this does not appear to be related to LAN DNS/firewall configuration
  • Semi-local works normally

Certificate update logs

When tapping Update SSL Certificates, the network request itself appears to succeed:

Task <...> resuming, timeouts(60.0, 604800.0)
Task <...> summary for task success {transaction_duration_ms=2, response_status=200, cache_hit=true}
Task <...> finished successfully

Install logs

When attempting to install a small signed IPA using Fully Local, the following errors appear immediately after initiating the install:

send failed: Invalid argument
send failed: Invalid argument
...
unable to make sandbox extension: [22: Invalid argument]

After that, the installation remains stuck on Ready.

Possible relation to backloop.dev shutdown

Feather's fully local install method appears to rely on the backloop.dev localhost certificate setup.

Opening https://backloop.dev now shows:

This service is discontinued

The page states that backloop.dev stopped issuing its public certificate on September 4, 2026, and now recommends a different certificate/trust approach.

Environment

  • Feather version: 2.9.0
  • iOS version: 27.0 (24A435)
  • Device: iPhone 17 Pro Max
