# Short bio (displayed in user profile at end of posts)
bio: Jeff's research focuses on making complex chemical kinetics suitable for simulations of the combustion of biomass for wildfire spread predictions. This is performed by beginning with detailed chemsitry and using reduction techniques to reduce the number of species and reactions without significant changes to the flame and combustion properties. Additionally, Jeff uses wildFireFoam, a solver developed by a fellow member of TESLa within the OpenFOAM framework, to simulate experiments performed by the Rieker Group. By comparing experiments and simulations, we explore how the errors in predicted flame properties affect the accuracy of predicted flame spread and other properties associated within wildfire. Future work includes the inclusion of soot modeling, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), embers and other particulate modeling to understand how these are transported by fires.

Jeff is funded by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) under grant W912HQ-16-C-0026 as project number RC-2642. He is co-advised by Dr. John W. Daily.
