Should non-targets version (main branch) be even *less* like a `targets` workflow?

If I remember correctly, in the workshop that uses this, we started from a pretty standard looking analysis project with maybe numbered scripts "01-wrangle_data.R" and "02-analyze_data.R".  Would it make sense to get rid of functions in `R/`?
