Also as a follow up: I think there might then be potential for you to just launch the virtual shifting part of your app as a seperate app for Android and iOS with only Smart Trainer support, but very minimal UX and settings - I think there are lot of smart trainer users without official virtual shifting support that could be interested. And this would make it independent of the app! |

hah! I didn't know this! thanks
yeah my idea is creating a table with a gear gain prefixed basically i would i like to create a 4 columns table with:
and so on what do you think? I would like also to add several negative values (or not?) |

Good ideas!
I will try to implement this asap
I guess we can go by steps, starting with sending the wheel setup and then
adding the table

… Yes - I understand that adjusting the gradient is fine for a lot of users.
For me it would be great to have something closer to "real" virtual gearing
so that I can test a certain gear ratio on a certain climb - e.g. before
bikepacking up the Stelvio. Then I would test some gearings to get an idea
and ride up there in Rouvy (or some other app) 😄
So my complete idea for wahoo devices only:
- Add a wahoo specific config setting with the following:
- Crankset size (tooth count)
- Cog size (tooth count)
- Wheel size (here I would add a dropdown e.g. with these values
<https://support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000738484-Tire-Size-Wheel-Circumference-Chart>
From these you then know the original ratio e.g. 40t x 14t = 2.86 and
whell circumference in mm e.g. 700 x 44C would be 2230
You then add another table (either in the general section for gear ratios
or in the wahoo part) that contains the gearing config (basically like your
suggestion - only you would not need the for this case or simply ignore it):
Gear Crankset Rear Cog
1 40 44
2 40 36
... ... ...
24 40 10
So then you have the individual ratios - e.g. gear 1 = 40/44 = 0.91
Maybe a table with a maximum of 24 gears and if a line is not entered then
you ignore it (so you could for example just fill in 12 or 18 gears)
Then when this wahoo specific shifting is activated you calculate the
resulting correct circumference. The formula would be
(configured_circumference)/ (target_gear_ratio) *
(configured_original_ratio) - in the example above for gear 1 it would be
2230/0.91 * 2.86 = 7008.6mm. I hope I got that right...
Instead of changing the grade with an offset you then send the updated
circumference to the trainer via the protocol specified here
<https://github.com/jvivenot/KickrShiftr?tab=readme-ov-file#protocol-used>
.
This would really be great for wahoo users!

My values would be (I would just configure my bikepacking configuration):
- Crankset: 40
- Rear cog size: 14
- Wheel size: 700x44 (= 2230mm)
Gear Crankset Rear Cog
1 38 44
2 38 38
3 38 32
4 38 28
5 38 24
6 38 21
7 38 19
8 38 17
9 38 15
10 38 13
11 38 11
12 38 10
This would simulate a 1x12 Force AXS XPLR Setup and would be great for a
first test. I could also create a sequential table for a 2x12 setup with a
common gearing combination later today (i.e. only with the really used
gears in sequential order).

I have not tested yet, but just for the record this would be an alternative table for a future test with a 2x12 gearing setup (46/33 x 10-36). I tried to choose the best switchover point from 33 to 46 so that the gears are sequential:

@cagnulein Now that it seems to be mostly working for Wahoo devices you could look into further ones (Elite?) or even FTMS 😄. At least according to this post it should work via FTMS for Elite trainers. This could really spread virtual shifting capabilities independently of the virtual training app - great potential I would say! |

@cagnulein @GraVvVel Did the Mayan 8 route (lots of variety in terms of uphill and downhill) on Zwift yesterday and the gear shifting works very well. Sometimes it feels as if the trainer, Wahoo Kickr v4 (Not Core BTW), takes a bit of time to make the changes, but not more than a second. It makes me wonder what the official Zwift virtual shifting system feels like. |

Also did a short test right now, since I missed yesterday to disable the ftms bike option. This was done now! Although I choose the profile "Explorer" in the Wahoo option, I'm able to shift to gears greater than 13. See debug log. Is this intendet or should this be limited to the confguration table (13 gears configured, only possible to shift until gear 13 or at least limit the resistance for gear greater than 13 to this value? |

@cagnulein The new gear changing system for works brilliantly but I have a doubt about what happens with the wheel circumference setting when I change into ERG mode. Let's say I start a session on GZ and then I connect to Zwift. (My gear setting always seems to go to 1 even though in bike settings I have put 10 as startup gear.) So I guess the wheel size for gear 1 gets sent to the Wahoo Kickr. Then I choose to do a workout in ERG mode, so the gears are no longer working (or are they?) |

Yes because zwift doesn't send a "finish command" as far as I know. Do you

into to mode but GZ apparently carried on in ERG mode with a constant 145
watts. The only way to get back to normal was to close and restart GZ and
re-pair in Zwift, after which the gears worked again.

guys i guess i Increased the speed of the gear changing for the wahoo devices. if you want I can send you the ios build (send me an email about this) or the android build is here https://github.com/cagnulein/qdomyos-zwift/actions/runs/11699893676 you can also now improve it more changing the 200ms default value in the Pool time (ms) setting under the treadmill options, domyos one (yes i have to change the position, but for the moment, let's change this value). for example set it to 50 if you want to improve it even more! |

Just had some really weird behaviour in mywhoosh with ios build 928. Gear changes would have no effects or completely random - I couldn’t really figure out what was going on. And even stranger: When I stayed in the same gear, pedaling got harder, the stronger the downhill, and lighter, the stronger the uphill. |

This morning I tried the build 941 on iOS and selected the Rolling Hills gear profile but I don't understand how does this work. I feel some resistance changes when the gradient changes but considering that the Rolling Hills profile has 15 gears, I was expecting to be able to change gears only between 1 and 15 being 1 the easiest and 15 the hardest. What I'm I missing? |

So far I already love the possibility to basically use Zwift hardware (Cog + Click/Play/Ride) with any training app for virtual shifting on a lot of trainers. However I would propose to add a possibility to add your own gearing ratios in a table. This could look something like this:
Chainring size (tooth count): 40
Rear cog size (tooth count): 14
Number of virtual gears: 13
Ratio gear #1: 0.8
....
Ratio gear #13: 4.5
The first part of the config (your real configration) is done by Zwift automagically when you use a virtual gearing compatible trainer in the first couple of seconds by measuring flywheel speed vs. power - this part would be hard to implement I guess, but it would be no real overhead for the user to enter it manually. The individual virtual gears could alternatively also be specified like this (might be easier for the user):
Gear #1 - Crankset: 40 T Cog: 44 T
Gear #2 - Crankset: 40 T Cog: 36 T
...
Alternatively you could maybe also have a couple of common gearing combos as preset tables (similar to what Zwift has included).
