High memory usage on Chrome - is this normal?

I'm using supersized slideshow (3.2.7 from Download page) with images of around 2MB and seeing the memory used by Chrome increase by ~40MB with each slide transition. Left long enough it will crash the page (Awww, snap!) I can reproduce by adding a few large images to the demo.html.

Is this normal? Anything that can be done about it?

I notice that even moving the mouse results in a 4K memory increase.
