build(guest): build minimal rootfs - #1245
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe PR replaces guest-tools build and qualification with a guest rootfs pipeline. It adds target/profile handling, dependency staging, rootfs validation, updated Make targets and documentation, and CI integration. ChangesGuest rootfs pipeline
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The PR adds a minimal guest rootfs build and structural validation. It is mergeable with explicit owner awareness that some hosts may fail because of the required Python/toolchain and temporary-path assumptions, and one validation path does not yet use all supported readelf variants. Pull request overview
This PR updates the guest build pipeline to produce a deterministic minimal guest rootfs as part of make guest, and shifts CI qualification from a standalone guest-tools artifact to structural rootfs validation. It preserves the standalone boxlite-guest output for runtime builds while packaging boxlite-guest, mke2fs, and resize2fs into a rootfs artifact with a manifest and deterministic rebuild checks.
Changes:
- Build and publish
target/<triple>/<profile>/guest-rootfs/(rootfs + manifest) as part ofmake guest. - Convert e2fsprogs tooling build into a private, caller-staged helper (
build-guest-deps.sh --dest ...) and validate inventory/ELF/manifest determinism. - Replace
test:guest-toolsand the CIguest-toolsjob withtest:guest-rootfsand aguest-rootfsqualification job.

The build script honors five

what is the file size of the final output
There was a problem hiding this comment.
This PR currently produces a directory-form rootfs rather than a packaged filesystem image.
For x86_64-unknown-linux-musl/release, the three-file payload is 22,027,232 bytes (~21.0 MiB):
- boxlite-guest: 21,067,736 bytes (~20.09 MiB)
- mke2fs: 560,048 bytes (~0.53 MiB)
- resize2fs: 399,448 bytes (~0.38 MiB)
The follow-up integration will convert this directory into image. Its logical image size will depend on the configured filesystem capacity, so it is not part of this PR’s output contract.
For reference, a local smoke using the current 256 MiB minimum ext4 sizing produced a 256 MiB sparse image using about 37.2 MiB on disk, or about 7.5 MiB when gzipped.

- On failure, this script cleans up the temporary build directory but can leave partially installed artifacts in the caller-provided --dest directory. Because parse_args enforces that --dest starts empty, leaving partial files behind makes the next run fail with “destination must be empty” and requires manual cleanup.
Consider removing any files created under --dest when exiting with a non-zero status (while keeping the directory itself).

Use the selected readelf tool for the DT_NEEDED fixture.
The rootfs verifier accepts llvm-readelf and ${target%%-*}-linux-musl-readelf. Line 98 requires readelf only. If a supported Linux host lacks readelf, this qualification test exits before it runs the rejection check. Resolve readelf_tool before this block and assign real_readelf="$readelf_tool".
