feat(network): add tunnel listener forwarding - #1243
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe PR changes network tunnels from one-connection handles to one-shot tunnels. Tunnels can now be consumed with ChangesTunnel forwarding core
Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to This PR adds repeatable local listener forwarding and new SDK lifecycle paths. Explicit non-loopback binds can expose forwarded services, while a C error path can terminate the host process or leave an output pointer invalid; additional concurrency and listener-recovery issues can disrupt forwarding. These issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

355-366: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy liftConsider dropping the prepared connection instead of reserving it for the first client.
NetworkHandle::tunnelopens a backend connection eagerly.forward_with_boundkeeps that connection andrun_forwardergives it to the first accepted client. The listener can idle for a long time before the first client arrives. The guest service or the vsock path can close an idle connection in that window, so the first client can receive a dead connection while every later client gets a fresh one. The failure is also asymmetric and hard to reproduce. An alternative is to close the prepared connection at bind time and open a fresh connection per client, including the first one. That costs one extra tunnel open but makes all clients behave the same.

Limit the remote-profile requirement to URL mode.
Without --listen, the CLI prints a public URL and requires a remote REST profile. With --listen, the implementation forwards both local and remote tunnels through a local listener. The current paragraph makes the remote-profile requirement read as a requirement for listener mode too.
Use wording that separates these modes:

Add the forwarder declarations to this C SDK reference.
The API block immediately above declares boxlite_tunnel_connect() and boxlite_tunnel_free(), but the changed text introduces boxlite_tunnel_forward() and its lifecycle without declaring them. A C consumer cannot determine the required BoxliteSocketAddress, CTunnelForwarderHandle, callback types, or ownership rules from sdks/c/README.md.
Add the declarations and related types here, or link directly to docs/reference/c/README.md and keep both sections synchronized.

Enforce loopback-only TCP listeners
BoundListener::bind passes every TCP address directly to TcpListener::bind. Explicit 0.0.0.0, ::, and host-interface addresses can expose the forwarded guest service on those interfaces. Enforce loopback-only TCP addresses in the core, or document this exposure in the tunnel API and both SDKs.

Do not panic across the FFI boundary. Initialize *out_address first.
Two problems exist in boxlite_tunnel_forwarder_address:

.expect(...). A panic that crosses anextern "C"boundary aborts the process.boxlite_tunnel_uriin the same file handles the identical NUL case by returningBoxliteErrorCode::Internalat lines 408-414. Use the same handling here. - The function never writes
*out_address = ptr::null_mut()before it does work. Every other out-parameter function in this file initializes its output first, for example lines 115, 312, 385, 441, and 495. Without that write, an error return leaves the caller's pointer uninitialized.

Clarify the contrast with WithPort.
The text states that WithPort "creates a persistent, local-only host listener that accepts repeated connections". A TunnelForwarder also holds a persistent local listener and also accepts repeated connections, so the stated difference does not separate the two features. A reader cannot tell which one to choose.
State the actual difference: WithPort is configured at box creation and is local-only, while Forward is created on demand from a prepared tunnel and works with both local and remote runtimes.

Guard the r.handle write in Close with drainMu.
ensureDrainRunning now reads r.handle while holding drainMu. Close writes r.handle = nil without that mutex, so a concurrent TunnelForwarder.Wait or Close that calls ensureDrainRunning races on the pointer. The race detector reports this, and the Go memory model leaves the read undefined.
A use-after-free does not follow, because Close closes closing first and stopDrain waits for drainDone before freeing. The fix is still small: take drainMu around the handle write in Close.

Document the new public forwarding APIs consistently across the Python, Node.js, and Go SDKs. The exported address and forwarder types lack documentation for accepted address forms, one-shot tunnel consumption, returned address behavior, lifecycle methods, blocking or asynchronous behavior, and ownership expectations. Add the documentation at the primary definitions and keep the language-specific wrappers consistent.

Do not end the forwarder on a transient accept error.
The inner loop retries only ErrorKind::Interrupted. accept also fails transiently with ConnectionAborted (the client vanished during the handshake) and with descriptor exhaustion (EMFILE/ENFILE). In those cases the listener is dropped, state.finish reports a fatal error, and every later client fails, even though the listener socket is still healthy.
Retry the aborted case, and keep the fatal path for real listener failures.
