NameError: undefined local variable or method 'permitted_params'

Hello,

Let me know if opening an issue is an okay method for asking for help, or redirect me to the right place.

I tried to implement your permitted_params gem according to your blog post into my Rails app.

This screenshot (it's a Dropbox link) shows the error on the top, curl request on the bottom left, and config/initializers/permitted_params.rb on the bottom right.

Am I supposed to have some sort of include within my controller(s) to be able to use permitted_params?

Try swapping

@user.comments.new(user_id: uri_params[:user_id], content: permitted_params.comment[:content])

with

@user.comments.new(permitted_params.comment)

and let me know if that resolves your problem.

I got the same NameError by trying that.

Found the fix (for anyone else that may come across this).

Turns out my ApplicationController was inheriting from ActionController::API instead of ActionController::Base.

To fix it, I found where the gem source code was with bundle show permitted_params and changed the following line in permitted_params.rb:

class ActionController::Base

to this:

class ActionController::API

Ya just figured that out as well. Was just about to post this

class ActionController::API
protected
  def permitted_params
    PermittedParams.new(params, self)
  end
end

Also, if you wish to not edit the gem itself you can just paste the code in the initializer or anywhere else you think will be a good fit.

I'd actually leave this open. Rather than monkey-patching ActionController::Base we should use a lazy load hook. Both ActionController::Base and ActionController::API call ActiveSupport.run_load_hooks(:action_controller, self).
