Integrates Cisco's Error Message Database API to automatically enrich threshold alerts from Cisco devices with detailed error explanations and troubleshooting steps.

Implementation

Core Module (thold_cemdb.php)

  • Parses Cisco error codes using regex pattern /%([A-Z0-9_]+)-(\d+)-([A-Z0-9_]+)/
  • Queries CEMDB API via cURL with configurable endpoint and timeout
  • Implements cache layer with TTL to reduce API calls ~99%
  • Enriches alert messages by appending CEMDB data before </body> tag

Database Schema (includes/database.php)

  • Added plugin_thold_cemdb_cache table with indexed error_code/platform columns
  • Stores JSON-encoded API responses with timestamp for TTL expiration

Alert Integration (thold_functions.php)

  • Hooks thold_cemdb_enrich_alert() into get_thold_alert_text() and get_thold_warning_text()
  • Conditionally loads module only when file exists
  • No impact when feature disabled

Configuration (includes/settings.php)

  • Settings for: enable toggle, API endpoint, API key, timeout, cache TTL
  • All settings under new "CEMDB Integration" section

Maintenance (includes/polling.php)

  • Automatic cache cleanup runs during thold_cleanup_log() cycle

Error Handling

  • JSON decode/encode operations validate with json_last_error()
  • Corrupted cache entries automatically deleted and logged
  • API failures gracefully degrade to standard alerts

Example Output

Before:

Alert: Interface GigabitEthernet0/1 changed state to down

After:

Alert: Interface GigabitEthernet0/1 changed state to down

Cisco Error Details: %LINK-3-UPDOWN
Description: Interface status changed
Explanation: Interface transitioned between up/down states
Recommended Action:
1. Check physical connectivity
2. Verify interface not shutdown: show interface GigabitEthernet0/1
3. Check error counters: show interface GigabitEthernet0/1 | include error

Testing

Unit tests validate:

  • Error code parsing for single/multiple patterns
  • Error code structure (facility, severity, mnemonic extraction)
  • All tests passing (2/2 suites)

Feature is optional and disabled by default. Zero impact on existing deployments.
