Why cant i select location manually without enabling location permissions?

Seems unnecessary to ask for permission when the user could just select the place.

In addition and unrelated, in the app it shows me the nashville temperature but not in the 3x1 widget.

No one is forcing you to give your location permission. The app works completely fine without it, letting you search and favorite places without ever granting any location permission. For your second question the widget and the app's location is totally separate and each of them let you select the location for them independently.

In that case i dont know how to search on the widget. The field is greyed out.

Which field? You can only select one of your favorites to set for the widget.

The top search field. There's only nashville in the drop down menu under it because i cant select anything above it

So I'm still not sure if you're talking about the widget settings or the search bar in the app. But if you're talking about the widget settings them it says there "favorites you add in the app appear here" which I think is pretty self explanatory. If you're talking about the search bar in the app itself then i guess you're talking about the favorites section for which you can add another favorite by clicking on the search bar (labeled search) searching for the place you want to add and then click the star icon next to it to favorite it.
