MenuLibre does not start. It displays “MenuLibre cannot be run as root.”

MenuLibre copies and updates files in the user's home directory. When run as root (usually invoked by sudo), the files created are owned by the root user, which can cause unpredictable behavior including rendering the user's menu unusable.

If you have already used MenuLibre as the root user with a previous version, check your file permissions in the following locations:

  • /home/USERNAME/.config/menus
  • /home/USERNAME/.local/share/applications
  • /home/USERNAME/.local/share/desktop-directories
