If the comments were not threaded this could be done in css easily enough. However threading makes things more complicated.

Easiest will be using css even and odd selectors in jquery to assign classes recursively to each threaded level.

A css class should be added for each. I propose enclosure2 and enclosure3 to provide fallback classes that will work for all palettes. If a palette doesn't work very well with this scheme, it can simply target div.steem_comment.enclosure2 { ... } and div.steem_comment.enclosure3 { ... } and override the enclosure classes normal color and background-color values.
