I'm interested in trying this out on some altcoins. Is it still necessary to run a patched version of the daemon?

Insight will probably serve you better for altcoins, assuming the altcoin RPC bitcoind interface is compatible and supports txindex'ing.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry to see this PHP block explorer being retired, but it's understandable. In the year since I opened this issue I have already begun the processes of re-writing/improving the code base. It is available in my Github repository if you are interested in following it's progress. It's been a few months since I done anything else though.
