feat(lore): develop Great Blue Crystal shards into arcane technology #110

Description

@zoeyrose

Architecture amendment — one authored content source (2026-08-13)

Initiative atrinik/atrinik#357 supersedes every future live-branch instruction below. atrinik/content@main is the sole mutable authored source for replacement and Classic targets. Future authored changes land only on main; supported Classic artifacts are deterministically derived from the same immutable main revision. Do not create, restore, author, backport, validate, or publish through a live 1.x branch.

Exact historical 1.x commits, tags, releases, assets, preserved local snapshots, provenance, parity records, and comparisons remain valid immutable evidence. This amendment changes no other feature, balance, lore, compatibility, licensing, validation, or ownership acceptance criterion.

Outcome

Continue the Great Blue Crystal storyline through a bounded, playable
crystalcraft chapter: Morliana's researchers learn that carefully prepared
shards can store and release a spell pattern through a device or consumable,
giving an untrained user limited access to packaged magic while trained casters
still cast directly.

The first chapter should turn the existing research, electricity, mana-storage,
and dangerous-contact clues into one coherent piece of Atrinik fantasy
magitech. It should produce at least one reusable crystal-cored prototype and
one powdered-shard consumable using existing item behavior before proposing a
new engine-wide crafting or device system.

This is not a request to retcon every wand, scroll, potion, or power crystal as
a Great Blue Crystal product, nor to give the whole setting a literal cyberpunk
makeover.

The proposal has unusually strong foundations in current authored content:

  1. Morliana's founding account
says a blue crystal fell from the sky, glowed with power and warmth, and
produced the surrounding riches that funded the village. A nearby
    sign goes further:
life there is possible only because of the Great Crystal.
  2. This is already an active research thread, not only an old legend. Olbar
says the Morliana Research Center's assistants are
experimenting on a Great Blue Crystal shard.
In Construction of Telescope, Albar sends the player for another shard,
learns that the Brynknot and Morliana crystals share a sky-fall origin, and
builds a telescope to search for more
    (shard investigation,
    conclusion).
  3. Brynknot supplies the strongest science/technology hook. Achetran describes
    crystal clusters that
turn surrounding air into electricity, discharge it into the main crystal,
    and harden it
    .
The telescope quest also treats water around the Morliana crystal as a
    special bottled ingredient
    (quest step),
which is a natural precursor to tonics and balms.
  4. Incuna supplies the warning and wearable-device analogue. Lost Memories
says an excavated blue crystal amplified an explosion, was probably
impossible to work normally, and was dangerous to touch
    (discovery).
Kobolds nevertheless fashion it into a talisman; bare contact establishes a
    bond with a dark presence
    (talisman and presence).
The resulting artifact already grants health/mana properties and is described
    as buzzing with energy
    (artifact definition).
Present-day text does not prove that the Incuna crystal is literally the
Morliana object, so their relationship should remain an intentional question
    until content review settles it.
  5. Ordinary mana crystals already establish a neighboring magical technology:
they store and return mana, and Gandyld's quest has alchemists improve a
    crystal's capacity with concoctions
    (quest,
    base archetype).
This gives the world an existing vocabulary for storage and refinement
without requiring Great Blue Crystal shards and ordinary mana crystals to be
    the same substance.
  6. The public website now uses the Great Blue Crystal as its lead lore motif:
it is the hero artwork and the homepage's
    featured founding story.
Continuing this thread therefore reinforces the project's current public
identity rather than elevating an incidental prop.

Classic already has enough behavior for a content-first prototype:

  • the authored magic devices skill explicitly covers
    wands, rods, and horns,
and Classic selects that skill when firing a wand or rod
    (implementation);
  • potions also use Magic Devices and can deliver an assigned spell
    (implementation); and
  • the authored alchemy table can accept ordinary or artifact ingredients, with
    existing scarcity and power-balance guidance
    (formula contract).

The current formula file contains guidance but no authored recipe entries, and
it has no stable recipe-identity layer. A first shard consumable can therefore
be assembled inside the bounded quest, or it can deliberately become the first
validated formula only after its identity, discovery, failure, and migration
contract is defined. Do not assume a complete general crafting loop already
exists.

Two boundaries need to be explicit:

The existing blue_crystal_fragment must not become a common crafting
currency. It is a one-purpose quest object with quest_item, no_drop, and
startequip behavior
(definition).
Create a separate stable sliver, powder, or research-sample identity with an
intentional source and lifecycle.

No current local plan, live issue, or pull request owns this story continuation.
The closest tracked work is adjacent rather than overlapping:

Proposed story spine

Use the existing Morliana Research Center and Construction of Telescope as
the deterministic entry point for a short chapter. Exact names and canon
wording remain subject to content review.

  1. Resonance. After the telescope is finished, Albar and Olbar discover that
a prepared shard does not create arbitrary magic. It stores, shapes, or
repeats a pattern impressed by a trained caster. This explains why a
non-caster can invoke a bounded effect without making study obsolete.
  2. Safe material. The player obtains a laboratory sliver, fractured byproduct,
or recoverable sample from an already disturbed site. Do not chip the central
Morliana crystal or consume the telescope quest's unique fragment. Refining
it requires insulation/containment because raw pieces produce heat, static,
    amplified reactions, or mental resonance.
  3. Three material forms. Research establishes a readable rule of thumb:
    • an intact shard is a reusable core for a wand, horn, or rod;
    • powdered shard suspended in a solvent releases one stored pattern as a
potion, tonic, balm, or dust; and
    • a fine crystal filament or powder traced through fibers can stabilize a
written pattern, but its ability to bypass casting training remains
unresolved until the scroll contract is deliberately changed.
  4. A working prototype. The player helps assemble and test one modest,
fixed-effect crystal-cored device and one consumable. At least one test must
be performed by a character with insufficient Wizardry to cast the effect
directly, demonstrating the premise through play rather than dialogue alone.
  5. The cost of use. A test overcharges, attracts a response, or briefly
reproduces the Incuna talisman's disturbing resonance. A rival researcher,
merchant, miner, or smuggler can push for mass extraction while Morliana's
researchers argue for controlled use. Resolve the immediate accident and
establish a safety protocol without answering whether the crystals are
alive, linked, sent, or merely carrying something else's signal.
  6. A bounded result. The chapter ends with a useful but limited prototype,
a permanent research readable/dialogue update, and one clear hook: controlled
civic uses, illicit shard trade, another skyfall, or investigation of the
Incuna presence. It should feel like the start of an industry and a danger,
not the instant replacement of Atrinik's magic economy.

The visual/tone target is arcane instrumentation, conductive frames, glass,
runes, containment cages, workshop apparatus, and cold blue discharge: fantasy
magitech that fits Morliana and Brynknot. Neon cityscapes, firearms, implants,
and a world-wide cyberpunk retone are not required.

Scope

  • Add a deterministic post-Construction of Telescope continuation at the
Morliana Research Center, with enough NPC dialogue, environmental feedback,
and fixed readables to establish the material rules and their uncertainty.
Give relevant discoveries stable lore-topic identities suitable for the
frozen collection planned by Implement data-driven per-character achievements server#31.
  • Define a separate, stable shard/sliver/powder reagent family. Document source,
scarcity, ownership, drop/recovery behavior, trade policy, and what happens on
    loss, reset, abandonment, and completion.
  • Add at least one crystal-cored wand/horn/rod prototype and one
powdered-shard potion/tonic/balm/dust prototype. Prefer existing licensed art,
item types, spell flags, and Magic Devices behavior for the first slice.
  • Choose fixed, level-appropriate effects, casting levels, charges or
consumption, recharge policy, value, and acquisition. The prototypes must
not provide an unlimited high-tier bypass around spell progression.
  • Add an explicit lore comparison between Great Blue Crystal material and
ordinary mana/power crystals: decide what each stores, how each is refined,
and why their behavior is related or merely analogous.
  • Preserve the dangerous Incuna contact as a warning. Decide whether the
relationship is same substance, same class of skyfall, contamination, or an
unanswered hypothesis; do not silently flatten the dark presence into benign
    battery lore.
  • Treat woven crystal scroll/fabric behavior as a declared decision. If it is
flavor/stabilization only, say so. If it lets non-casters activate a spell,
update/link the owning server design before implementing it and test the new
    action-source/skill boundary.
  • Add a linked Classic or replacement-server issue only if the selected first
prototypes expose a real reusable runtime gap. Do not add bespoke runtime
machinery merely to rename behavior that existing wands and consumables
    already provide.

Acceptance criteria

  • The continuation is discoverable through a deterministic, documented
prerequisite after Construction of Telescope and can be followed from
research request through prototype consequence and resolution.
  • Canon distinguishes trained direct casting from stored/device-mediated
magic without making spellcasting racially exclusive or contradicting the
    Wizards' Tower.
  • Great Blue Crystal material, ordinary mana/power crystals, the Brynknot
electricity account, crystal-charged water, and the Incuna talisman are
either reconciled or left deliberately distinct with no accidental
    contradiction.
  • A new stable reagent identity is used; blue_crystal_fragment retains its
    existing telescope-quest ownership and behavior.
  • At least one reusable core device and one consumable demonstrate the lore
in gameplay, including a low/insufficient-Wizardry user and a trained
    caster.
  • Casting level, effect, charges/consumption, recharge, source skill,
cooldown, value, rarity, and acquisition are explicit and balanced; no
prototype becomes an unlimited or dominant substitute for spell
    progression.
  • Scroll/fiber behavior is explicit and consistent with the owning
spell-discipline/action-source issues; no content text promises a bypass
    the runtime does not provide.
  • Raw contact/overcharge risk, research ethics, and material scarcity are
shown through at least one playable consequence or environmental beat,
while the deeper origin/presence mystery remains available for later
    chapters.
  • Losing, consuming, trading where allowed, resetting, abandoning,
repeating interactions, dying, or re-entering cannot soft-lock the quest
    or duplicate a permanent reward.
  • Every new or changed quest part, map, archetype, artifact, spell, recipe,
readable, interface, image, animation, and script reference is represented
by stable catalog identities and validates cleanly.
  • Relevant fixed discoveries expose stable lore-topic identities/tags and
integrate deliberately with Implement data-driven per-character achievements server#31's
lore.blue_crystal_trail; adding this chapter does not silently make the
planned achievement missable or dependent on a one-time branch.
  • Focused catalog/world audits, the released map checker where applicable,
python3 tools/validate.py, and git diff --check pass independently on
    both content lines.
  • Classic runtime playtesting covers the exact prerequisite, collection,
    crafting/assembly, low-Wizardry device use, trained-caster comparison,
    failure/overcharge, loss/recovery, completion, reset, and re-entry states.

Release lines

The current crystal lore, relevant quest interfaces, reagent, magic-device and
consumable archetypes, and mana-crystal material inspected for this proposal are
byte-identical on main and 1.x. This is shared authored-world work and is
expected to land on both lines:

  • author the canonical change on main;
  • backport it to the Classic 1.x branch in a separate worktree and linked pull
    request;
  • validate each line independently and preserve line-specific metadata and
    generated output; and
  • only the canonical main pull request closes this issue; the 1.x companion
links the issue and canonical pull request without a closing keyword.

Any single-line exception must include concrete format, consumer, runtime,
attribution, or provenance evidence. Do not merge either branch wholesale. This
follows the release-line contract established in #45.
