New Mailer config confusing

Hello,

I could configure and get email alerts very easily in the previous version but the current localDB version is very confusing.

First because of the variety of emails to provide:

• Email
• from
• to
• user

There should be only an account (user ?) and a to. Why are the other values helpful. Moreover, the config suggest that to, Email and password are enough to provide for gmail, this is not the case.

Can someone provide a working sample for gmail please ?

Because not everyone uses Gmail - when I added the extra settings Mike was worried that we might have made it too complicated for Gmail users....

The config file says:

Email: 'me@gmail.com',                // Your GMail address

  // You don't have to set your password here, if you leave it blank we will ask it
<snip>

  password: '',                                // Your GMail Password - if not supplied Gekko will prompt on startup.

  tag: '[GEKKO] ',                        // Prefix all EMail subject lines with this

            //       ADVANCED MAIL SETTINGS
            // you can leave those as is if you 
            // want to use gmail

  // Non-GMail settings - If you are not using GMail you will need to enter the appropriate values below.

So you enter your Gmail adress where it says 'email' as per the comment on that line, you (optionally) enter your password where it says 'password' and , well that's it you can ignore the entries below where it says 'you can leave these as is if you are using gmail'....
If you are getting an actual error message then please post that and we can better advise you.

I think it is probably just a documentation issue.

I tried the simple version and provided:

config.mailer = {
enabled: true,
sendMailOnStart: true,
tag: '[GEKKO_DEV] ',
Email: 'theaccount@gmail.com',
password: 'thepassword',
}

It fails with the following message:

2014-01-28 21:55:12 (WARN): error sending email { [Error: connection
encountered an error]

code: 5,

{ [Error: connect ECONNREFUSED]

 code: 'ECONNREFUSED',

 errno: 'ECONNREFUSED',

 syscall: 'connect' },

smtp: undefined }

I have tried many combination providing including smtpauth, tls, ssl, port,
from, to, etc.... I am not sure I understand why is this missing smtp
mentioned here.

I also tried providing the server/host= smtp.gmail.com without success.

Any idea ?

Start from the config in the CURRENT config.js (from localDB rather than master) which includes all the 'extra' bits - this then avoids any issues with expected variables not being set. Set your email address and password in the appropriate places.

There are NO default values set in the code and it looks as though the smtp server variable is undefined...

Still i don't get the need for #4.
Account+to i understand.
From and account are most likely the same or?
Then we have Email again.

I guess 2 values would be enough and less confusing.

Or is there a need for other values for non Gmail users?

Email is the odd one out because that was the value used in the 'old' version so it was left as the same name but is really just used to set the other values if they are not specified.

There are mail setups where the username that you use to log in to the mail server is NOT your email address. An MS Exchange system is one example where you would log in with your domain\username. You would also have to ensure that you were sending FROM the correct email address or the system would reject the mail.

You may also be sending out through a mail server that is not related to your email address so would need different logon details.
