fix(desktop-proof): bind BCDBoot to protected ADK - #720
Conversation
Ambient and applied-image BCDBoot are not reliable or trusted for pre-merge candidate provisioning. Bind execution to the reviewed serviced ADK closure, protect its namespace through process exit, and make failed-run identity cleanup observable. CHANGELOG: Use the verified Microsoft ADK toolchain for protected desktop proofs and preserve exact cleanup evidence. Refs #711 Ref: ADR-0031
📝 WalkthroughSummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe change pins Windows ADK Deployment Tools in the desktop boundary, validates its files and ACLs, protects BCDBoot execution with a native lease, and records identity cleanup observations after failures. ChangesADK boundary and broker execution
Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change binds boot-file creation to the approved ADK toolchain and protects it during execution. An abrupt interruption or cleanup failure could leave access controls altered and temporarily block later proof runs, so the PR is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up for recovery handling. $matchesto avoid shadowing the$Matchesautomatic variable.
$Matchesis a PowerShell automatic variable and is case-insensitive. This assignment overwrites the function-scoped regex-match state. The current code still behaves correctly, becauseConvert-CanonicalWindowsAbsolutePathandConvert-CanonicalWindowsRelativePathset and read$Matchesinside their own scopes. Any future regex use in this function that reads$Matchesafter line 407 would read stale data silently.♻️ Proposed rename

1187-1188: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAssert the assignment count instead of the exact indentation string.
assignmentsis compared against a literal containing exactly 16 leading spaces. The test intent is that$catchTornis assigned exactly once inside theaccount-disabledcase. The current form also pins the indentation width of broker line 2406. A whitespace-only reindentation of thatswitchcase then fails this test with an opaque list diff.Line 1178 has the same fragility class:
broker_source.index(" $failure = $_")relies on four leading spaces to skip other$failure = $_occurrences.Close-ApprovedAdkExecutionLeasenow containscatch { $failure = $_ }at broker line 933 and avoids the match only because of its inline spacing. The sibling test at line 2046 already passes a start offset for this reason.♻️ Proposed change

What & why
Use the reviewed, serviced Microsoft ADK Deployment Tools closure for protected desktop guest boot-file creation. The broker now rejects ambient host and applied-image BCDBoot, holds the exact approved namespace and file observation through process exit, and records failed-run identity cleanup from the parent scope.
This is the prerequisite for PR #711. It does not provision the desktop proof, authorize device login, or merge any branch.

The final independent review passed with 0 Critical and 0 High findings. Three Medium test-hardening and cleanup-diagnostic items remain: partial-acquisition rollback diagnostics, production collector and locked-validator mutation coverage, and runtime lifecycle and data-flow mutation coverage.
The DACL lease does not defend against malicious code already running as the trusted elevated broker. That is an accepted trusted-host residual under the current threat model. Expanding that boundary requires a new ADR and privilege separation. Conflict hierarchy Level 1 applies: the review keeps the residual visible without silently changing the accepted attacker model.
