Newest stable version of SteamVR (v2.16.6) causes error 303

Description

After updating to the newest stable SteamVR version (2.16.6), SteamVR throws error 303 and the tracking inside SteamVR doesn't work. The image flickers and moves with the headset, the controllers don't work either.

A downgrade to the "previous" branch resolves the issue.

I can confirm that the same issue is present on the latest nightly too (v21.0.0-dev13+nightly.2026.06.02).

I noticed this from 1st beta of this release onward, thought the maintainers would realize this aswell, but this issue might be limited to linux. Anyone having issues with this on windows for confirmation?

Neither alvr-git or alvr work, and throw some compilation error. alvr-nvidia was deprecated? Regardless, all of this is rather annoying.

Can confirm things are indeed broken for me too. Running X11 (xfce), Debian, with a 1080 Ti (nvidia driver version 550.163.01). I'm on ALVR 20.14.1 and the newest stable SteamVR version (v2.16.6).

Using the previous branch seems to have (semi) fixed things. It still breaks for me every few launches (much more than it did prior to the stable update's release), though that could be unrelated.

I've pulled this to Valve, if anyone is still having this issue drop your specs in the thread referenced above. If that doesn't work for you, a link can be found here. (SteamVR-For-Linux/#901)

Other than that, I'm curious what happened to the ALVR-NVIDIA AUR package. I used it for a while but it was unavailable when I last installed it, and the link on the wiki was dead. Not that it's a huge thing but I did like having proper CUDA acceleration, as to my knowledge the Quest's GPU supports it in some capacity (don't quote me on this).

The package was removed because of compilation errors with Arch's newer cuda. I've made changes to the build step so ALVR doesn't need cuda for compilation (and still use NVENC), but these changes aren't in a stable release yet, so it only affects the master branch (alvr-git on AUR).

Btw, cuda doesn't affect the Quest, since it's only used for encoding on the PC (idk exactly what is used as a decoder on the Quest).

Same issue, downgrading to the previous SteamVR beta branch (currently v2.12.14) fixes it. Tested with latest ALVR v20.14.1 (both client and server; versions match). I am on Xubuntu 24.04 LTS.

i confirm that the current SteamVR version broke ALVR, using the previous beta branch fixes it
