Suggestion: list events on the site

There's been a lot of discussion around if and how we should list events on site, or if we should just continue to use meetup almost exclusively. I'm leaving this issue here to hopefully promote some discussion on the matter.

I was looking into this, and I think it MAY be useful to have a page embedding the meetup calendar.

The problem is, of course, that meetup doesn't have a way to embed the calendar. Recently, joe was talking about how we might want to move away from meetup in the future, so spending a lot of time integrating a calendar with meetup is probably to our deteriment.

A free and temporary solution is to set up a google calendar with the meetup ical as a feed, and then embed the google calendar in an /events page.

Google will update its feed every 12 or so hours, meaning the website will be updated roughly every 12 hours after meetup.

Do you happen to know how/where to get the meetup feed and how to integrate it with gcal?

There's a link at the bottom of https://www.meetup.com/allhandsactive/events/calendar/ which is an ical link

That can be added to a google calendar in the calendar or import settings. From there, we can use that google calender with google's embed feature ( https://support.google.com/calendar/answer/41207?hl=en ) and place it on an /events page.
