The AppVeyor failure is caused by/fixed with nodejs/node-gyp#952 (node-gyp 3.4.0). Until npm is updated inside node one can use npm install npm -g to update npm - see https://stackoverflow.com/questions/38149603/npm-install-fails-with-error-c2373-with-vs2015-update-3 for details.

Force-pushed to re-run the Travis/AppVeyor builds and show that things are indeed ok with this version.
