If ota's are about to happen, and other critical stuff be done, it seems useful to have something like a lock for keyboard interrupts and reloads.
This would also perhaps allow the code to catch and read keyboard interrupts in a more elegant way than a million 'catch'.

I'm facing this problem as well, trying to let a circuitpython device communicate to an rpi over USB, to send image data to the device.
It's almost impossible to process a big image buffer in circuitpython on devices like an RP2040 because of the limited memory. I can't think of any workaround to this (under the limitations).
Implementing something similar to micropython.kbd_intr(char) shouldn't be too hard, but resolves this super annoying limitation.

EDIT: I've found a workaround for my problem, use the usb_cdc module to enable a separate data serial device, then transmit any custom data over that. Disabling keyboard interrupt can still be useful though.
