Magpie's weapon is a disrupter (real damage + slow), but it still used the Stardust/Reaver-style EMG sounds, which are soft and "wub"-like. The other disrupters (Dart, Bolas, Moderator, Buoy, Limpet) all have a sharp, high "pew", so this gives Magpie sounds in that family.

  • Fire (sounds/weapon/disruptor_emg.wav, 320 ms): a short, slightly muffled "kiki" pew (fast downward chirp over a crackly transient), over a quiet synthesized grumble. Plays twice per volley (burst 2).
  • Impact (sounds/weapon/cannon/disruptor_emg_hit.wav, 630 ms): a noisy, wet splat over a low rumble taken from the old emg_hit_medium. Tails kept short so four impacts per volley don't pile up against the engine's per-sound concurrency cap.

Both were tested in game at default volume. Provenance is added to the two origin.txt files.

After this, weapon/emg_medium and weapon/cannon/emg_hit_medium are no longer referenced by any unit; they're left in place.

I think those weapons have those sounds because of the physical properties of their projectiles, not the slow part of it. Most of those weapons are instant hit beams, Buoy is an energy weapon like Halberd, Limpet is a Shockwave. Commander sfx on EMG and Shotgun doesn't change when it equips disruptor ammo.

That's also an oversight

These replacements seem like they are too high pitched. The impact sounds like clipping even though it isn't.
