Description
This project was inspired by #3499; see that discussion for additional context.
It is possible for Openverse to ingest records with CC-licenses that do not allow downloads from the source site, as in the Jamendo example in #3499. If these records have a valid CC license we should include them in Openverse, but they present a problem for user experience and result relevancy if they appear in search results without context, and without a way of filtering them out. For example, a user who is searching for audio tracks to download for use may encounter a track that can't be downloaded, and reasonably assume that no tracks can be downloaded, causing them to abandon their search.
The project proposal should address:
- Should media types other than audio be considered?
- Should non-downloadable records be de-boosted in search results?
- Should we have filters to allow including or excluding non-downloadable records, to the user's preference? If so, should we also de-boost the results?
- Should we make any changes to the single result page for records that are not downloadable? For example, should we change the CTA text on the button that goes to the provider site (at time of writing, "Get this ")? Should we add a disclaimer?
We should remember to include an issue to restore non-downloadable Jamendo records when this is complete. That will require restoring records from the DeletedAudio table and then removing the logic to discard these results in the DAG.
