Complement the sync package exclusion from Core builds (#78081) by disabling the remaining public RTC APIs at their entry points. These APIs are already shipped publicly, so they cannot be made private; gate them on IS_GUTENBERG_PLUGIN instead so they no-op in Core builds: - getSyncConnectionStatus / setSyncConnectionStatus (core store) - SelectionType / SelectionDirection enums (wp.coreData) - isCollaborationEnabledForCurrentPost (core/editor store) Also gate the CollaboratorsOverlay mount in EditorInterface on IS_GUTENBERG_PLUGIN to prevent the overlay hooks from crashing on the now-undefined SelectionType in Core builds. Can we make this private? What's the point of shipping public APIs if they don't work? P.S. I think some of these new actions/selects should've been private from the start. |

I personally wanted to avoid making this private again, as it has already been published in the Gutenberg plugin. |

That's fine. IIRC, APIs are really public when they ship in core. At least that's how I remember this approach. |

Marking these APIs private is a cleaner contract: they were never intended for plugin/theme use, and privacy is enforced at the package boundary rather than at runtime. - core-data: move setSyncConnectionStatus to private-actions and getSyncConnectionStatus to private-selectors - core-data: move SelectionType/SelectionDirection runtime values behind privateApis. SelectionDirection enum moves from types.ts (re-exported via index.js) to crdt-user-selections.ts to keep it out of the public surface. private-apis.js becomes .ts and exports CoreDataPrivateApis so consumers can preserve enum type narrowing via a Pick cast. - editor: move isCollaborationEnabledForCurrentPost to private-selectors; update all consumers (editor, edit-post) to unlock the editor store. - Test mock for unlock now spreads its argument so production calls like unlock( select( editorStore ) ).isCollaborationEnabledForCurrentPost() still resolve through the mocked store selectors. After reconsideration, I have decided to make all RTC-related APIs private. This is to avoid the need to individually remove the |
Leftover whitespace after the public selectors were moved to private-selectors on this branch.

Right now, the main use case is to show a modal announcing the RTC feature (it's enabled by default in sites running the At this point, our custom RTC modal is not that relevant anymore, so we can drop it. Or, in other words, making the API privates won't affect Jetpack, and if needed we can implement an explicit unlock mechanism within Jetpack. |

I'm more thinking of folks using the API to build custom transport providers, these are the main APIs that I believe should ideally remain public. @maxschmeling might know if these are used or not? |

@youknowriad, IIRC, those are still public. Here's the dev note - https://make.wordpress.org/core/2026/04/01/building-a-custom-sync-provider-for-real-time-collaboration/. This PR only makes data actions/selectors private, and as far as I can tell, they're not needed for providers. |

Backport equivalent of #78097 onto wp/7.0. Move public sync/collaboration APIs behind privateApis so plugins/themes cannot rely on them in the WordPress 7.0 ship: - core-data: move setSyncConnectionStatus to private-actions and getSyncConnectionStatus to private-selectors. - core-data: move SelectionType/SelectionDirection runtime values behind privateApis. SelectionDirection moves from types.ts to crdt-user-selections.ts to keep it out of the public surface. - editor: move isCollaborationEnabledForCurrentPost to private-selectors; update edit-post and editor consumers to unlock the editor store. - e2e: opt-in to privateApis from collaboration-metabox-lock and collaboration-document-size-lock specs and the sync-connection-error-filter test plugin so the existing scenarios keep working without re-exposing the selectors publicly. Conflicts vs. upstream PR #78097 were resolved against the wp/7.0 baseline. Trunk-only refactors that the PR depended on (Site Editor view config server move, defaultRenderingMode imports, e2e helpers, http-only test relocation) are NOT backported; only the API-privatization changes are taken. This PR is part of the effort to disable RTC in the 7.0 release and ensures that public APIs are not shipped to core.
