Inserting links via Link Control, or with CMD+K, engages the link preview—reducing the need to click on the toolbar to reengage it.
We should do the same when a link is pasted in, that way I have quick access to edit the link further, copy it, or unlink it. It also makes the experience of adding links more consistent.
