What problem does this address?

If I put a link to a Mastodon toot in the embed block, it embeds, but it has no style applied and looks bad:

What is your proposed solution?

I would expect a Mastodon block for embeds. At the least, proper formatting for toots added to the embed block.

in an ideal world, I would expect WordPress to prioritize support for other open source alternatives to centralized publishing.

I'd recommend creating a trac ticket - https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ (Trac is the bug tracker for WordPress core.)

My understanding is that a prerequisite for the block is that WordPress supports Mastodon as a recognized embed provider. I think this is the part that needs to be updated:

This may also explain why there are no styles:

@talldan Since Mastodon is not 1 single website, but software that can be deployed to any url, we might need a different approach than the provider whitelist.
