you using wrong method to select algorithm

there is no ANY Amplitude modulation
in 2 operator mode it's can be named as Additive synthesis

for 4 operator mode
this AM/FM switches completely nonsense

it's different patches that completely cannot be described as AM\FM + AM\FM

and you can't get algorithm that actually do this "AM"+"AM"
(on OPN you can)

you need graphical selector like

and MAIN problem
it's wrong names of output operators in different algorithms
i'm put volume to operator that named "carrier"
and get silence....

correct naming

but in 4 operator mode this "carriers" depends on 1 fnum
so maybe? it's better way to named it as "output" operators

Interesting explanation, yea. Speaking about 4op mode of OPL3, it somewhere weird unlike OPN family, and to change the mode is need to select a combo of AM/FM flags on both pairs. Actually, I used this wrong terminology from various documentation including Yamaha's that's I used as a reference. I'll check this deeper soon, and I'll try to revise the overall stuff to resolve this problem. Thank you for the explanation!

This has been a issue for too long of a time. One could say legacy issue.
I too, find this bother some.
However, I don't think it could just be solved by "correcting" it...

FM inventor J.Cowlings didn't foresee this mode... well I guess in his time, 60s, theses "things" would just be called OSC oscillators... and that you can connect it to your heart's content.

After Yamaha take over, they just call them Operators, and connections algorithm.
But, remember, there's also Korg, and other synthesiser manufacturers. They flat out can't use Yamaha's terminology, for it's patented, so they gotta roll their own.

Within Yamaha chip users, it's not all sunny happy days.
OPL2 on IBM PC for example, lot of people don't have access to YM3812 APP/DATA SHEET-s, they'll also invent their own, like "Parallel Connetion" on FMT patch editor.....

Later, when they had, the manual just wasn't clear on what to call them.
OPL3 mode for example, just like wohlstand said, you'll need to select AM/FM flags on both pairs.
AdLib Tracker // used AM/FM AM/FM FM/FM AM/AM for the bit selected to differentiate Algor 1 2 3 4.

Nowadays, Furnace Tracker just gave up, Call them Alog 1234, and give you four other selections of terminology.
and all the VSTi on DAWs..... wow.....................................
they just can't help re invent the wheel with a name....

....Tho troubled I am, still can't see a reason trying fixing this historical problem...

How can you call it right or wrong on a land of lawless?
if no right or wrong, can't all the terminology be "right" in some cases?'
can't "right" term be wrong, say you're using Korg.....

maybe... a edit-able .ini/.lang file for one to change the terminology.

It's just me humble opinion.. 2 cents if you'll.
