🛡️ SOC Home Lab | Detection Engineering & Threat Hunting using Splunk

Splunk Kali Linux Windows Server Active Directory OPNsense Suricata Sysmon MITRE ATT&CK Status

📌 Overview

A practical Security Operations Center (SOC) home lab designed to simulate realistic cyber attack scenarios, collect security telemetry, engineer detection rules, perform threat hunting, and investigate security incidents using Splunk Enterprise.

The environment combines:

  • Windows Server / Active Directory for identity and domain-based infrastructure.
  • Windows endpoints for endpoint telemetry and security event generation.
  • Kali Linux for adversary emulation and attack simulation.
  • OPNsense Firewall for network segmentation, traffic filtering, and security enforcement.
  • Suricata IDS/IPS for network intrusion detection and network security monitoring.
  • Sysmon for detailed endpoint process, network, and system telemetry.
  • Splunk Enterprise as the centralized SIEM, detection, investigation, and visualization platform.

The project follows a SOC-oriented workflow:

Attack Simulation → Telemetry Collection → Log Ingestion → Detection Engineering → Alert Analysis → Threat Hunting → Incident Investigation → Documentation

The goal is not only to generate attacks, but to understand how an analyst detects, investigates, correlates, documents, and responds to suspicious activity across endpoint, identity, and network telemetry.

🎯 Key Objectives

  • 🎯 Attack Simulation: Emulate realistic adversary TTPs aligned with the MITRE ATT&CK framework.
  • 🏢 Identity Monitoring: Monitor Active Directory authentication and Windows security events.
  • 🖥️ Endpoint Monitoring: Collect Windows Security Logs and Sysmon telemetry.
  • 🌐 Network Security Monitoring: Monitor network traffic through OPNsense and Suricata.
  • 🔥 Firewall Monitoring: Analyze firewall allow/block events and suspicious network connections.
  • 🚨 IDS/IPS Monitoring: Detect network-based suspicious activity using Suricata.
  • 🔍 Detection Engineering: Develop, test, and optimize SPL-based detections.
  • 🕵️ Threat Hunting: Investigate suspicious activity using multiple telemetry sources.
  • 📊 Security Dashboards: Build SOC-oriented dashboards in Splunk Dashboard Studio.
  • 📝 Incident Response Documentation: Produce structured SOC Level-1/Level-2 incident reports.
  • 🧩 MITRE ATT&CK Mapping: Map observed behavior to adversary techniques and tactics.

🏗️ Architecture & Lab Environment

The lab is designed as a layered SOC environment where security telemetry is generated at the endpoint, identity, and network layers and centralized in Splunk.
