Description
Jerker suggested that we have a page somewhere with information on the migration process from Crex to Gorilla, what to expect, what the paths will be, how backup works now (maybe link to whatever comes from #247 ?) etcetc. Which makes sense, we're likely going to get a tonne of questions about this so having something to link people to would be great.
Below is an "early draft" I guess, basically the text in the upcoming maintenance window notification. Will likely need some work, not to mention formatting. (Don't really have the time to figure out how to match the rest of the docs right now, so no draft-PR or anything will be forthcoming, at least not today.)
Late thought: should this page be a FAQ perhaps? Seems like a reasonable format for a page that will likely mainly be used to link to users when they contact us with questions. Also, easy and convenient to add new information to it.
We will start doing migration of projects from the old system Crex to the new system Gorilla. We will do this project per project and send mail to users when their data is being moved since this will change how the data is accessed by changing the file system paths.
Please note that this will for all users mean new paths to the directory containing your data, and so any scripts you have to run jobs will likely need updating.
We will also stop defaulting on backing up everything and instead backing up only the backup directory for every project.
In many cases many smaller projects will be collected into one project, if requested by the PI.
So before the move:
/proj/oldprojectname (backed up)
/proj/oldprojectname/nobackup (not backed up)
After the move:
/proj/newprojectname/ (not backed up)
/proj/newprojectname/backup (backed up)
/proj/newprojectname/oldprojectname1 (not backed up, all data from oldprojectname1)
/proj/newprojectname/oldprojectname2 (not backed up, all data from oldprojectname2)
/proj/oldprojectname (will NOT work)
/crex/proj/oldprojectname (will NOT work)
We sincerely hope this will not be too confusing and we will make our best to make the transition as painless as possible.
