Thank you very much for your pull request. Unfortunately I cannot merge it. I decided that the old read_me.txt just does not fit very well to GitHub. Therefore I created a completely new README.md. Hopefully this does not refrain you from sending other pull requests.

Github will show files named some case-insensitive variant of readme.* on the project page, but not "read_me". So I renamed it to show up on the project page.
