What

Everyone seated on a train is warned at least 30 s before it would collide with another train at current speeds and switch settings. The first warning flashes a Collision warning title (at most once every 10 s). A red boss bar then counts down, e.g. "Oncoming train: collision in 24 s", with an alarm that rings twice as often in the last 10 s. Warn only: no automatic braking.

Labels: Oncoming train, Stopped train ahead, Train ahead, Train closing from behind. Riders of a standing train that another train is heading for see "Train approaching".

How

  • TrainRoute.trace records the pieces of rail a walk covers. TrainHandler.collisionPath traces from the trailing coupler past the leading one, following switches as set (including an armed one), and stops at track ends and broken rail.
  • CollisionForecast steps each pair of trains forward in 0.1 s steps, using the same rule as TrainCollision: a head (the locomotive, or a car on its own) touching any part of another train. Coupled cars without their locomotive pass through each other, so pushing cars into a standing train warns for the locomotive.
  • A throttle that rose since the last check is forecast to keep rising at the full rate (a point a tick) up to the engine's effective limit (health, overdrive and cooldown). An accelerating train is also tried at steady speed, and the sooner contact counts. The look-ahead runs one check past seconds, so the first warning still comes the full time before.
  • Parked cars (not spawned) come from a new in-memory TrackedCarIndex, kept by VehicleRepository on save/upsert/tombstone and rebuilt at open. No SQLite is read during checks. A parked car whose spline has gone, or no longer runs under where it stood, is re-found on the nearest track. Live couplings override saved parents, and every parked car counts as a head.
  • Each moving train's steps are worked out once per check, and the search stops at the soonest contact found so far. With 8 moving trains and 400 parked cars on a 5,000-block line, the forecast takes about 0.25 ms per check (every 10 ticks).
  • Settings under collision-warning in trains.yml: enabled, seconds 30, check-ticks 10, margin 2, parked-car-half-length 5, and the alarm sound and interval. Existing configs use these defaults.

Testing

  • mvn clean verify: 1,590 tests, 100% line coverage.
  • TrainReversePlacementTest.headOnTrainsAreWarnedBeforeTheyCollide moves two real consists with splineTick and explodes them with the real TrainCollision.tick. In all four cases (both at full throttle head-on, full throttle at a stopped train, the other train pulling away towards you, and cruising at half throttle then opening it up just after a check), the first warning comes at least 30 s before the explosion, never promises more time than is left, and is never more than 3.5 s early.
  • Real-client lab (Paper 1.21.10 with Dev's VehicleFramework, ModelEngine and TLibs configs and Dev's resource pack): two simple locomotives 950 blocks apart at full throttle. The title flashed, the bar counted down from 28 s to 1 s, and both exploded where they met.
  • Reviewed over three rounds by GPT-6-Astra; its final verdict was ship.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Riders get a title flash, then a boss bar countdown and alarm, at least 30 s
before their train would collide with another at current speeds and switch
settings: oncoming, stopped, slower ahead, catching them from behind, or parked
in chunks where it has not spawned. Riders of a standing train being run into
are warned too. Warn only; no automatic braking.

The forecast traces each moving train's route through set switches and steps
both trains forward 0.1 s at a time, using the same rule as TrainCollision:
a head (locomotive or lone car) touching any part of another train. A rising
throttle is forecast at the full rate up to the engine's effective limit.
Parked cars come from an in-memory index of saved track positions and are
re-found by world position after digs re-id or shift their track.

Settings live under collision-warning in trains.yml.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added configurable train collision warnings for moving trains and parked cars, with red countdown alerts and alarm sounds.
    • Warnings can account for train speed and acceleration, and let riders know how soon a collision may occur.
    • Added settings for warning lead time, check frequency, train separation, parked-car size and alert sounds.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds configurable train collision forecasts and rider warnings. It traces train paths, includes saved parked cars in collision checks, and updates warning displays during the vehicle tick cycle.

Changes

Train collision warnings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Warning configuration and tracked-car index
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/cache/Cache.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/database/TrackedCar.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/database/TrackedCarIndex.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/database/VehicleRepository.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/loaders/TrainsLoader.java, src/main/resources/trains.yml, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/database/TrackedCarIndexTest.java
The configuration defines warning timing, margins and sounds. The repository indexes saved train cars and updates the index after saves, upserts and tombstones. Tests cover parsing, index updates and repository persistence.
Train route and collision paths
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/tracks/TrainRoute.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/tracks/TrainPath.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/vehicles/handlers/TrainHandler.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/tracks/TrainPathTest.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/vehicles/handlers/TrainReversePlacementTest.java
Route tracing records rail segments. TrainPath derives ranges and overlap from those segments. TrainHandler.collisionPath builds the consist path and locomotive collision interval. Tests cover route tracing, path ranges and collision-path placement.
Collision forecast
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/tracks/CollisionForecast.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/tracks/CollisionForecastTest.java
The forecast evaluates constant-speed and accelerating movement, finds the earliest path contact and classifies it. Tests cover contact types, timing, acceleration and no-contact cases.
Warning checks and rider display
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/tracks/TrainCollisionWarning.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/managers/VehicleManager.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/VehicleFramework.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/tracks/TrainCollisionWarningTest.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/vehicleframework/vehicles/handlers/TrainReversePlacementTest.java
The warning system checks moving trains against other trains and saved parked cars. It updates rider boss bars, titles and alarm sounds, and is called from the fast tick cycle. Shutdown clears warning state. Tests cover warning recipients, timing, sounds and collision simulations.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d5a18

Train collision warnings look ready to merge with one follow-up. If a database transaction fails partway through, the in-memory list of parked cars can disagree with what is saved. Riders could then see a warning for a train that is not there, or miss a warning for one that is, until the server reloads the data. The feature only warns and never brakes, so the impact is limited. Rebuilding the parked-car index on rollback is a small fix.
