 It prevents installation of custom cores by mangling the file name of the json file when it saves it, and then failing to find it because they're using the correct filename (but the file is named incorrectly) Really, there have been a TON of bugs in the 2.x versions, I'm not sure if any "good" versions of the 2.x codebase exist - they have been introducing bugs as fast as they fix them.
