gtm: prepare and publish an OSS-first Show HN #238

Description

@Siddhant-K-code

Goal

Prepare and publish an honest, technically detailed Show HN for AgentTrace as an open-source developer tool, independent of Verio's commercial validation.

Moved from Siddhant-K-code/Verio#6 because this is OSS distribution work.

Positioning

Lead with the developer job AgentTrace supports today:

  • capture observable coding-agent activity locally;
  • replay tool, file, command, error, retry, duration, token, and cost evidence;
  • compare or evaluate sessions;
  • export to OpenTelemetry-compatible backends; and
  • keep provider and capture limitations visible.

Do not pitch a hosted Verio product, generic engineering analytics, compliance certification, or complete access to model reasoning.

Preparation

  • Verify the latest PyPI install and quickstart from a clean environment.
  • Choose one reproducible session that demonstrates a real debugging or review problem.
  • Record a concise terminal demo or GIF using current commands and output.
  • Confirm every technical claim against the current release and documentation.
  • Prepare an honest limitations section covering provider visibility, optional content, and incomplete capture.
  • Check that linked documentation, examples, and release artifacts are current.

Draft structure

Suggested title

Show HN: AgentTrace – local, open-source evidence and replay for coding agents

Post

  1. The concrete problem: a final diff hides retries, failures, tool activity, and recovery work.
  2. How AgentTrace captures observable events without becoming an LLM gateway.
  3. A minimal install and replay example.
  4. Current support for local analysis, comparisons, evaluation, and OTel export.
  5. What AgentTrace cannot observe or prove.
  6. Repository and documentation links.
  7. One focused question for HN readers.

First comment

Prepare a technical explanation of event sources, the local store, privacy defaults, capture gaps, and export model. Keep Verio out of the post unless someone explicitly asks about commercial plans.

Launch discipline

  • Publish when the maintainer can respond for at least four hours.
  • Do not ask for stars or coordinate voting.
  • Answer technical criticism directly and record repeated product feedback.
  • Treat comments as OSS and problem evidence, not as proof of commercial demand.

Acceptance criteria

  • Install and demo are reproduced from a clean environment.
  • Post and first comment receive a factual review.
  • All claims match the current AgentTrace release.
  • Limitations are included in the initial post.
  • Show HN is published.
  • Top-level technical questions receive responses.
  • Repeated problems or requests are summarized into follow-up issues.

    The Telemetry.dev learning produced follow-up work that should feed this launch without turning it into a Verio pitch: use #239's verified clean-environment activation path and capture matrix for install claims; use #240's explicit evidence-health/limitations language when available; and use the representative review fixture in #242 for the demo. #241 is an optional distribution experiment and should not block Show HN.
