The First POWER8 Port of Claude Code!
This is a working port of Anthropic's Claude Code CLI tool for IBM POWER8 (ppc64le) architecture.
- Full Claude Code npm package (v2.0.70)
- Native ppc64le ripgrep binary for fast code search
- Node.js 20.x compatible
Download from the binaries/ directory:

# Download and extract
tar -xzf claude-code-2.0.70-ppc64le.tar.gz
cd claude-code
# Install globally
sudo npm install -g .
# Or install locally
npm install .If you already have Claude Code installed, just add the ripgrep binary:
# Find your Claude Code installation
npm list -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
# Extract ripgrep to vendor directory
tar -xzf ripgrep-ppc64le-linux.tar.gz
sudo cp -r ppc64le-linux /usr/lib/node_modules/@anthropic-ai/claude-code/vendor/ripgrep/The IBM POWER8 S824 server offers:
- 128 hardware threads (dual 8-core SMT8)
- Up to 4TB RAM Numa acceleration.
- VSX (AltiVec) vector processing
- Perfect for running local LLMs alongside Claude Code

POWER8 (ppc64le) is not officially supported by Claude Code. The following modifications were made to enable support:
The stock Claude Code package includes ripgrep binaries for:
x64-linux,x64-darwin,x64-win32arm64-linux,arm64-darwin
We added a new directory with a ppc64le-compiled ripgrep:
vendor/ripgrep/ppc64le-linux/rg # ELF 64-bit PowerPC binary
How to build ripgrep for ppc64le:
# On POWER8 Linux (Ubuntu 20.04)
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh
source ~/.cargo/env
git clone https://github.com/BurntSushi/ripgrep
cd ripgrep
cargo build --release
# Binary at: target/release/rgNode.js returns process.arch === 'ppc64' on POWER8. The Claude Code cli.js uses this to construct the path:
// Pseudo-code of how Claude Code detects platform:
const arch = process.arch; // 'ppc64' on POWER8
const platform = process.platform; // 'linux'
const rgPath = `vendor/ripgrep/${arch === 'ppc64' ? 'ppc64le' : arch}-${platform}/rg`;No code modification needed - just adding the binary directory is sufficient because the detection logic already handles non-standard architectures gracefully.
The @img/sharp-* dependencies in package.json don't include ppc64le:
"@img/sharp-linux-x64": "^0.33.5",
"@img/sharp-linux-arm64": "^0.33.5",
// No ppc64le version existsWorkaround: Sharp is optional for Claude Code. Image processing features may be limited but core functionality works.
# The included binary was built on:
# - Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (POWER8)
# - Rust 1.75.0
# - ripgrep 14.1.0
$ file vendor/ripgrep/ppc64le-linux/rg
