Stacked on #191 (codex/public-assembly-20260930, 75f6c37), alongside #207. This PR adds 0348628 and f44f603.

What changed

When the meter close-up photo failed to save, the close-up asked for a retake with the blur reason, so the screen said "Hold still" (ScanEngine.swift at 75f6c377). A steadier hand can't help a phone that can't write the photo. A photo that saved but couldn't be read back said "Couldn't read the number. Hold still for another photo.", which blamed the shot in the same way. This was finding B-20.

  • KeyframeStore.saveStill now returns what happened: .saved, .notWritten (no image bytes, or the write failed) or .worldDiscarded (written in a world frame that was thrown away meanwhile).
  • A photo that wasn't written, or couldn't be read back, retakes with the new CloseUpProblem.photoNotSaved: "Your phone couldn't save that photo. Hold on the meter to try again."
  • The failure counts as one failed attempt, as before. On the next one "Can't get a clear shot" appears, so the homeowner can retry once and then skip.
  • A shot from a discarded world frame is dropped without a retake. The discard has already sent the flow back to finding the meter, and the next close-up starts its own count.
  • The close-up is read back once, before the capture flash and count. The thumbnail and the meter reader use those same bytes, so a photo that can't be read back is never counted as a capture. KeyframeStore.thumbnail(ofStill:) had no other caller and is removed.
  • No photo that failed to save is listed or accepted. A close-up saved earlier and turned down by the reader stays a plain photo of the scan, as before.

Test hook

-failCloseUpSave works only with -replay. It drops the close-up's photo before the real saveStill, which then takes its own not-written path. The replay is close to the meter for under a second, so under this hook the reason stays up 10 s instead of 2, which keeps the UI test from missing it. Live scans keep the 2 s notice and can't turn the hook on.

UI changes

From CloseUpSaveFailureUITests on the iPhone 17 Simulator at f44f603, default text size. There's no matched before capture, since no test could make a save fail at 75f6c37. The before wording was "Hold still".

Close-up screen reads "Your phone couldn't save that photo. Hold on the meter to try again." with the photo count still 0

Verification

  • Hosted full run 37112843868 on f44f603: 651 package tests in 92 suites passed, and 58 UI tests ran with 1 skipped and 0 failures. CloseUpSaveFailureUITests passed in 40 s, reaching the message, the skip and the walk.

  • A fresh Sol review of 0348628 found two issues. A read-back failure still counted as a capture, and the UI test could miss the 2 s reason. f44f603 fixes both, and a re-review found nothing further.

  • Local runs: none. The shared Mac's heavy-job lease wasn't available, so the hosted run is the only execution.

Risk

  • The UI test proves the routing, the message and the skip. It doesn't prove the message is readable in the 2 s a live scan shows it, because the hook holds it for 10 s.
  • The test drops the photo bytes before the save, which takes the same .notWritten path as a failed write. A real disk-write failure, and a photo that saved but can't be read back (not counted as a capture), are checked by review only.
  • Nothing ran on a phone. A truly full phone was not tried, and whether ARKit and the rest of the scan behave before this message ever shows is unknown.
  • The skip still reads "Can't get a clear shot" after a save failure. The message above it gives the real cause, so I left the label alone.

Checklist

  • The scope is focused; related changes belong together
  • I explained what changed and why
  • UI changes have captures (new state; before wording quoted)
  • N/A video: no motion changes.

A failed save of the meter close-up retook with `.blurry`, so the screen told the
homeowner to hold still, which can't help a phone that can't write the photo (B-20).
A photo that couldn't be read back for the meter number said "Couldn't read the
number", blaming the shot the same way.

`KeyframeStore.saveStill` now says what happened: saved, not written, or written in
a world frame discarded meanwhile. Not written, and not read back, retake as the new
`.photoNotSaved`: "Your phone couldn't save that photo. Hold on the meter to try
again." It counts as a failed attempt, so "Can't get a clear shot" still follows on
the next one. A shot from a discarded world frame is dropped without a retake: the
discard already sent the flow back to finding the meter, and a new close-up starts
its own count. No photo that failed to save is listed or accepted.

`-failCloseUpSave` drops the photo before the real save on a replay, so
CloseUpSaveFailureUITests reaches the message and the skip through the real engine.

…ds its reason up

Review of 0348628: a photo that saved but couldn't be read back still flashed as a
capture and counted, then asked for a retake. The close-up is now read back once,
before the acknowledgment, and those bytes feed both the thumbnail and the meter
reader, so `KeyframeStore.thumbnail(ofStill:)` goes.

The replay is close to the meter for under a second, so after the 2 s notice the
gate's "Move closer" replaced the save-failure reason before the UI test could be
sure to see it. Under `-failCloseUpSave` only, the reason stays up 10 s.

Close-up capture now distinguishes save and readback failures from photo-quality problems. The scan engine reports a dedicated retake reason, handles keyframe write outcomes, and passes verified JPEG bytes to the reader. A replay launch option and UI test cover the save-failure path.

Close-up Save Failure Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Save outcomes and failure reason
ios/HouseScan/Contract/ScanContract.swift, ios/HouseScan/Runtime/KeyframeStore.swift
CloseUpProblem adds photoNotSaved. saveStill returns distinct outcomes for a saved still, a failed write, or a discarded world frame. The unused still-thumbnail method is removed.
Close-up save and readback
ios/HouseScan/Runtime/LaunchOptions.swift, ios/HouseScan/Runtime/ScanEngine.swift
The -failCloseUpSave option enables replay failure simulation and a 10-second retake notice. The scan engine handles save outcomes, reads back the JPEG and thumbnail, and passes the JPEG data to the reader.
Retake feedback and UI validation
ios/HouseScan/Runtime/Autopilot.swift, ios/HouseScan/UI/Copy/ScanCopy.swift, ios/HouseScanUITests/CloseUpSaveFailureUITests.swift
Autopilot treats photoNotSaved as a retake. The close-up screen displays retry guidance. The UI test checks the failure message and navigation after skipping the close-up.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f44f6

An unreadable close-up can show the wrong retry reason. This is a bounded issue, but the readback check should reject undecodable photos before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f44f6

The change improves failed-photo handling without identifying new access or permission expansion. Remaining uncertainty concerns recovery timing around a reused photo filename, rather than broader exposure of photos.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected failure path affects the current device-local scan's close-up bytes, capture acknowledgment, reading candidates, and photo acceptance. Its destination is derived from the captured store and a constant filename, rather than a newly supplied attacker-controlled path. No expanded cross-scan or cross-service authority was identified in this path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Spatial reset increments generation before discarding stored entries, and asynchronous capture and reader completions check generation and phase before updating visible state. Starting over also increments generation and replaces the store. These controls reject stale state completions across the inspected reset paths; they do not bind filesystem bytes to a generation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A pre-existing ownership limitation remains: atomic writes and the epoch check protect whole-file writes and catalog membership, but not generation ownership of the reused filename. An old detached write could replace a recovered close-up before readback. The base already left discarded writes on disk and read the same shared filename; this PR reduces duplicate reads but does not demonstrably introduce or worsen that race.

### Issue 1
ios/HouseScanUITests/CloseUpSaveFailureUITests.swift:16
This test removes the JPEG before `saveStill`, so it checks the missing-photo case but not a disk-write failure or a photo that cannot be read back. Those paths are central to the new message, yet either could regress while this test still passes. Please add coverage for both, including that an unreadable photo is not counted as a capture.

Summary

The PR distinguishes an unsaved meter close-up from a blurry or unreadable shot, reads saved bytes back before acknowledging capture, and adds a replay-driven UI test.

  • Save outcomes now distinguish a write failure from a discarded world frame.
  • An unreadable saved photo requests a retake without incrementing the capture count.
  • The new test covers the no-photo failure path, but not disk-write or read-back failure.

Partly agree. The test drops the photo bytes before saveStill, which is the same .notWritten return a failed write gives: both are .failure inside one detached task and map to one retake. A real disk-write failure can't be forced from a UI test without a filesystem seam in KeyframeStore, which this PR doesn't add. The read-back failure, and the rule that it isn't counted as a capture (the acknowledgment now comes after the read-back), are checked by review only. The PR's Risk section should say so, and I'm adding that line. A replay hook that deletes the saved file before the read-back would exercise it through the real engine. That is a small follow-up if wanted.

That distinction is fair. The hook exercises the same .notWritten result and retake routing as a failed disk write, so requiring a filesystem seam here would be disproportionate. The remaining gap is specifically the read-back-failure path and its no-capture-count invariant; documenting that limitation in Risk is appropriate for this PR. A hook that removes the file between saveStill and read-back would be a useful follow-up, but I wouldn’t block this change on it.

Reject an undecodable close-up during readback.

When Data(contentsOf:) succeeds but ImageWork.uprightThumbnail(jpeg:) returns nil, the current tuple remains nonnil. The engine marks the photo as captured and sends the invalid bytes to the meter reader. The reader then requests .noNumber instead of the contractually correct .photoNotSaved.

Suggested fix

Review comment at @ios/HouseScan/Runtime/ScanEngine.swift around lines 851 -
865:
Update the readback closure in the close-up capture flow so it returns nil when
ImageWork.uprightThumbnail cannot decode the JPEG; only return the JPEG and
thumbnail together when both are valid, allowing the existing readBack failure
path to mark the photo as not saved.
