fix up paths, correct language

A couple of the documentation files referred to were being referenced
by their names as shipped to unix systems (e.g. INSTALL), not as they
are shipped in the Windows .zip (e.g. INSTALL.txt).

Also fix a couple of infelicitous uses of English...
